Gyruss (Parker Brothers) (Atari 2600)
Quite a basic game, but it does have some good 3D effects. By far, the best feature of the game is its music. It makes the game much more dramatic and exciting than it actually is - it's almost worth buying the cartridge just to listen to it!
Strategy X (Konami) (Atari 2600)
Not one of the best battlefield games around. It has unrealistic graphics, although I like the way the tank moves along.
Marine Wars (Konami) (Atari 2600)
Although it's fairly simple, it does have some effective graphics and is also very colourful.
Although it is fairly difficult to make out the shape of the pigs, the wolves are graphically very good and I like the way they push the rocks in Round 2.
Star Wars: The Arcade Game (Parker Brothers) (Atari 2600)
A very enjoyable game with good music noises and 3D effects.
Games Of The Films
Jet Boat (Software Invasion) (BBC Model B)
Quite a game, original, challenging and nerve pinching... The action is very smooth, impressively so considering the amount of landscape and features that go whizzing by the jet boat as it accelerates away.
Dune Rider (Micro Power) (BBC Model B)
A fun game and well worth the money. The terrain is not easy, there are lava pits and radioactive rocks which you must jump.
B. C. Bill (Imagine) (Commodore 64)
The game is addictive though it does become increasingly difficult as the area overflows with wives, kids, food and dinosaurs.
Ice Hunter (Anirog) (Commodore 64)
Guide Thorak in his quest for the ice blocks that will help him to build an igloo. It has five levels where creatures wander causing death upon contact.
Terrahawks (CRL) (Spectrum 48K)
The programmer clearly knew what he was doing, with a nice opening menu and display sequence and well-laid-out screen display... but the storyline seems to have got left by the wayside.
Swag (Micro Power) (BBC Model B)
This package represents value for money consistent with the many similarly-featured arcade games at the moment, but its two player aspect will influence a potential buyer for or against it.
Gilligan's Gold (Ocean) (Commodore 64)
Excellent graphics... Exceedingly addictive... I found myself repeatedly playing the game with the incentive of going for just that one extra bag of gold each time I lost a life.
Santa And The Goblins (Intrigue) (TI99/4A)
The packaging is good quality, the instructions helpful and lucid... and the game very good value for money.
Sir Lancelot (Melbourne House) (Spectrum 16K/48K)
A high standard adventure game... It's got superb graphics, useful sound and all on a 16K machine.
Jasper (Micromega) (Spectrum 48K)
If you only purchase one game a month, this should definitely be your next one. Its addictive value will keep you going for most of that time.
Manic Miner (Software Projects) (BBC Model B)
Will provide hours of fun for any Beeb owner... It's a must.
3D Grand Prix (Software Invasion) (BBC Model B)
Normally I swear by Software Invasion, following their new releases closely... This is the first occasion I have ever felt like swearing at them.
Snappo (Oxford Data) (Memotech)
A faithful rendition of the original and has good clear graphics and sound effects.
It's quite an addictive game and seemed good value, but when I was doing quite well, the game crashed with a 'Bad value in 3400' message. After that, I rather lost interest.
Mineshaft (Durell) (BBC/Electron)
Playability is ultra important with a game like this and is where Mineshaft scores over its rivals.
Tapeworm (Continental) (Memotech)
Conceptually it is a simple game, yet its fresh colourful graphics make it an inviting game to play nonetheless.
Eddie Kidd Jump Challenge (Martech) (BBC/Electron)
Well packaged and appealing to the eye, with stickers and a competitions, the program should find quite a few impulse buyers.
Copter Capers (A 'n F) (BBC Model B)
There are many nice touches within this program including descending ladders, good sound effects and pleasant graphics but, if you're over twelve years old, there's little to enthuse about.
Kilopede (Continental) (Memotech)
A good attempt to replicate the arcade game... Challenging and fairly addictive.
Petch (Anirog) (Commodore 16/64)
The game begins with four monsters within the enclosure... and an additional one with each level that is successfully cleared.
Goldmine (Continental) (Memotech)
One of the best games for the Memotech and well worth the money.
Pole Position (Atarisoft) (TI99/4A)
One of the most exciting and realistic games going... You'll spend many a long hour with joystick - no gearstick - clenched in your sweaty fist.
Deadline: An In-Depth Review (Commodore) (Commodore 64/128)
If you have a Commodore 64 disk drive and you like having your mind stretched then this is for you.
Tower Of Despair (Games Workshop) (Spectrum 48K)
I thoroughly enjoyed this game. The plot and history were good and with some thought put into them.
The rules are easy to pick up, but playing the game is anything from easy.
Tycoon (Warlock) (BBC Model B)
A good game if you want to play a Monopoly-type game... but for me these games are best left to the board.
House Of Usher (Anirog) (Commodore 64)
Similar to Nightmare Park where a series of simple tasks have to be completed before the player is returned to the main playing area to choose another path for yet another challenge. The graphics and sound effects are far superior though.
The Oracle's Cave (Dorcas) (Commodore 64)
The game has been well designed and the graphics animation is realistic, but I feel that the only drawback is that only five days are given to complete the adventure.
Reversi (Continental) (Memotech)
A good old favourite. There's no need for sound and the graphics are simple and well ordered, with keyboard or joystick control of moves.
Lingo (Complete Microcomputer Services) (BBC Model B)
Spend the time, and give it some thought, and an extremely rewarding, often hilarious, experience can be had by all the family.
