Elektra Glide (English) (Commodore 64/Atari 800/Atari 800XL)
There's a lot here that's good - it's just that the whole thing doesn't get together to make a playable game.
The Force (Mind Games) (Commodore 64)
The program is being promoted on the strength of being 'icon-driven' - but icons don't really work in it. Indeed, their use here is clumsy and gimmicky.
Time Tunnel (US Gold) (Commodore 64)
This is such a highly entertaining puzzle package that you may want to become gnome king, strange though that may seem.
Super Bowl (Ocean) (Commodore 64)
I'm a bit torn about Super Bowl. It is very exact and precise. All the rules are there and the simulation works perfectly. It's a shame that the players are limited to the size they are by the C64's sprite capacity.
The Arc Of Yesod (Thor) (Commodore 64)
If you've seen the original expect more of the same, but it you're a newcomer to the Yesod games you'll get a good arcade adventure for your money.
Starship Andromeda (Ariolasoft) (Commodore 64/128)
Cracking this nut is going to be quite a challenge... It certainly has enough action to wear out my best joystick!
Rasputin (Firebird) (Commodore 64)
I grew to like this game more as I played it. Although, after a couple of hours play I managed just over five percent - plenty of scope for improvement there.
F. A. Cup (Virgin) (Commodore 64)
The matches are punctuated with such banal news that you want to reach for the happy pills. I mean, what use is 'The goal nets are stolen on the eve of the match'...? For a game which harps on about its realism, this is pathetic.
Gerry The Germ (Firebird) (Commodore 64/128)
With six screens of pure revulsion, this is bad... But actually, it's not as bad as it sounds.
Mr. Puniverse (Mastertronic) (Commodore 16/Plus 4)
An excellent game and well worth the usual two quid price tag.
They Sold A Million II (Ocean) (Commodore 64/128)
Two good games and two fairly average ones. Oh, and I doubt that these games actually did sell a million. Maybe half a dozen.
Mr. Mephisto (Bug-Byte) (Commodore 64)
This is one awful game. The graphics are so bad I'd opt to play it on a black and white TV, and Bug-Byte's idea of sound is a loud whirring noise.
Mugsy's Revenge (Melbourne House) (Commodore 64)
Excellent graphics, and a nice rag-time soundtrack... which are all wasted on Mugsy's Revenge. Because the truth of the matter is that there isn't a lot to it.
Dedicated wargame buffs will no doubt buy it, those with a passing interest will ignore it and those looking for something new and different would be extremely disappointed if they do buy it.
Geoff Capes Strongman (Martech) (Commodore 64)
This is a classic example of a game with a lot of promising new ideas that just doesn't work.
This is by far the best (certainly one of the only) dedicated Plus/4 games I've seen. If you've got one, go out and buy this. It's, er, ace.
Winter Olympics (Tynesoft) (Commodore 16/Plus 4)
I've made a belated New Year resolution to avoid Tynesoft games and I'd advise you to steer well clear of this one.
Commando (Elite) (Commodore 16)
The conversion works - which is more than can be said for some - and it has good graphics.
Pogo Pete (Tynesoft) (Commodore 16)
An original and fun game. Come back Tynesoft, all is forgiven.
Beach Head (US Gold/Access) (Commodore 16/Plus 4)
Anirog have tried to squeeze the proverbial quart into a pint pot... The graphics are fine but the game just refuses to function properly.
Borrowed Time (Activision) (Commodore 64)
A strong and entertaining storyline, really excellent graphics, and instant playability.
Se-Kaa Of Assiah (Mastertronic) (Commodore 64)
Graphics are very good, there's a help feature, and you can save a game whenever you wish.
Alternative Reality (Datasoft/US Gold) (Commodore 64)
In just a few hours of play I won't pretend that I've even begun to scratch the surface of Alternative Reality but it's quality through and through, offering a very superior kind of challenge if you're prepared to give it the concentration and time (lots of that) it deserves.
