A torrid, mindless celebration of muscles, macho rubbish and pantomime violence. Maybe that's why I like it so much. And, bruises from the joystick bash aside, that's probably why you'll like it, too.
Cisco Heat (Image Works) (Commodore 64)
One of the worst games of 1991. An absolute joke... And not a very funny one at £15!
The Blues Brothers (Titus) (Commodore 64)
If you go for games because of their uniqueness, you might find The Blues Brothers' beat too laid back. But it's simply good fun to play. It doesn't improve with two-player craziness but it's still fun.
The Simpsons (Ocean) (Commodore 64/128)
Platforming will a difference. This C64 game is very, very close to the original console game - including all the original cheats, skips and hidden zones. It's also got bright graphics with excellent high-resolution, colourful multiplexed sprites.
Tilt (Genias) (Commodore 64/128)
A fab puzzler. Once you get started, it's impossible to put the game down.
Super Space Invaders (Domark) (Commodore 64/128)
My advice is get a copy of Super Space Invaders. It's big enough to keep you occupied for ages.
Chase HQ (The Hit Squad) (Commodore 64/128)
You'll have to play this, if only to enjoy the wheeze of seeing extremely rich villainous types get what's coming to 'em.
3D Stock Cars II (Challenge) (Commodore 64/128)
If you only make one New Year's Resolution this year, make it "Don't buy this game, ever". I don't think you'll have immense problems keeping yourself to this.
Operation Thunderbolt (The Hit Squad) (Commodore 64/128)
It takes a while to get into, but once you're in the groove (as it were!) you'll have two pints of fun with a carton of enjoyment for the weekend.
Turrican (Kixx) (Commodore 64/128)
The classic arcade-style action is as tough as it is difficult. It's massive too. Fast, furious fun.
Dragon Spirit (The Hit Squad) (Commodore 64/128)
The scrolling is dead smooth and the dragon moves as fast as you'd expect but not quite as fast as you'd really like. In fact, the difficulty is pitched just right, because just as you think you haven't got a hope, you get a load of collectables such as extra lives, better weapons and, er, cash handouts.
Mean Machine (Codemasters) (Commodore 64/128)
Lives up to its name in the respect that it doesn't work out too well on the pence per mile factor. It's okay in a very average sort of way. But it doesn't give you the feeling of real driving power.
Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (MicroValue) (Commodore 64/128)
A rough 'n ready collection of sideshow favourites served up slightly cold. It might be great fun for Western lovers but some of these games look as though they were written in 1854.
Too Hot To Handle (Ocean) (Commodore 64)
A sound collection of four varied games. OK, Golden Axe is the only real bona fide classic here, but there's still bags of fun to be had.
Capcom Collection (U. S. Gold) (Commodore 64/128)
Definitely set to be a big hit with the huge legions of gore-loving action-fiends. There's some mediocre stuffing in here, but enough evidence of quality to warrant a high rating.
Max (U. S. Gold) (Commodore 64/128)
There's a lot of gameplay crammed into these four games. If you reckon yourself as a good gamer, get stuck in.
Super Sega (U. S. Gold) (Commodore 64/128)
Make like your C64 is an arcade machine and enter the glorious world of mayhem. Sega at their coin-op-ish best all in one box.
Chart Attack (Gremlin) (Commodore 64/128)
A fantastic compilation that really offers something for everyone. Three of the best C64 games bundled with two respectable titles.
World Class Rugby (Audiogenic) (Commodore 64/128)
There are plenty of options available. You can play in a World Cup tournament, league or plain old friendly, and there are other little bits to faff around with, such as skill levels and game-time. But, I'm afraid all these little tweaks can't stop you wishing that you were playing another rugby game instead.
Double Dragon III (Storm) (Commodore 64/128)
Not the kind of ground-breaking gore gala that's going to win over people who don't like the genre. But hardcore beat-'em-up fans who are looking for a big, fast and tough game to test them will find Double Dragon III an ideal thrash to while away the long winter nights.
Rolling Ronny (Virgin Games) (Commodore 64/128)
A promising idea... which rapidly becomes incredibly boring. I wasted an entire Saturday playing this game - don't make the same mistake as I did.
