An aura of doom hangs low over the mediaeval world of Albion, a primitive, mysterious world where magic still exists. Magic may only be used by the Order of Leofric, Patron of Magic and discoverer of the Thirteen Realms of the Arcane.
As Nathan, Inquisitor of the Order of Leofric, you have been informed that the Lord Talent of Dinham is believed to be attempting to open a portal into the forbidden Thirteenth Realm, the Realm which brings terror and disorder - The Realm of Chaos...
This superb Robico adventure features approximately 200 locations, over 100 objects, exquisitely written text, a plethora of perplexing puzzles, an exciting and original storyline, roving characters, wit and humour, an advanced sentence interpreter, thrills, spills, magic and mystery... In fact, it should give you hour upon hour of mind manipulating, brain-teasing entertainment.
Albion is a mediaeval world where magic still exists. However, it may only be used by those gifted with The Talent.
All use of magic is controlled by the Order of St. Leofric, Patron of Magic and Discoverer of the Thirteen Realms of the Arcane.
Talents working outside of the Order in the world of the Mundanes are overwatched by the supervisors and may only operate by the good will of The Order. They must regularly undertake examination by an Inquisition to ensure that contact with the Arcane has not caused corruption of mind, body and soul.
The Council of Twelve are a group of the most powerful Talents in Albion. Each member holds a key to one of the Twelve Realms of Order.
As Nathan, Inquisitor of The Order of St. Leofric, you have been summoned to the study of Father-Magister Alian to commence an investigation for the Council of Twelve. Father-Magister Alain informs you that the Lord Talent of the Village of Dinham is believed to be attempting to open a portal into the forbidden Thirteen Realm - the realm which brings disorder - The Realm Of Chaos!
Father-Magister Alain closes his eyes, his face cloaked by the gentle mist which rises from the ice-blue slab at his feet. He raises his hands and the azure cloud of the Transmission Spell billows around you...
VILLAGE OF THE LOST SOULS uses an advanced sentence interpreter which is able to understand full sentence commands, typed in upper or lower case, as well as multiple statements. Multiple statements may be used by typing AND, THEN, or comma (,) or full stop(.).
HELP prints out a list of useful verbs. This is not a complete list but should assist you during play. LOOK prints a description of your surroundings, EXAMINE takes a close look at an object, INVENTORY prints a list of your possessions. OPEN/CLOSE acts on doors, GET etc. picks up objects, DROP etc. leaves objects behind and SCORE informs you of your current progress.
NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST, NORTHEAST, NORTHWEST, SOUTHEAST, SOUTHWEST, UP, DOWN, IN and OUT may be used as directional commands. ALL and EVERYTHING may be used in conjunction with BUT/APART/EXCEPT.
Pressing the TAB key repeats the last command line. OG (go backwards!) or OOPS allow you to retract a move you would rather not have made. SAVE/LOAD/RESTORE may be used to save or load your position.
As you step from the mist of the Magister's spell, you recall his parting words... "You must aid the Rector of Dinham to destroy the window into the Thirteenth Realm". Gazing around, you see that you are standing in a ring of stones next to a muddy road.
And so begins the Robico remake of Martin Moore's Village Of The Lost Souls, originally the first of a trilogy; the two sequels were unfortunately binned. From the starting location, head E to where the cows have passed then NE to outside the Cottar's Hut. Go IN and UP the ladder within to a loft where hams hang from the rafters. These are useful for the thieving dogs outside - so GET HAMS then return DOWN and OUT. DROP the HAMS to disperse the pack of curs.
The next part of the adventure is somewhat tricky because you need to keep reading the location descriptions quite thoroughly for the snippet "You notice a dark bird circling high above you". If you are told about it, you must DROP ALL your inventory, move in any direction you can, find your way back (Careful, because the game has some illogical directional elements!) and then GET ALL. This stops it stealing your inventory.
Carefully therefore go SW back to cow plat land and E to a bend in the road. Head N and you will find a damaged farmhouse. Go IN and IN again to find a dead woman and a feather arrow. This arrow is needed to shoot down the bird so GET ARROW then return OUT and OUT again. Remember to keep checking those location descriptions for the presence of the bird!
Go SW back to the bend and S to a Rectory. From here, walk E to a crossroads then SW to a gatehouse with large sealed doors. Go S to a high, strong wall then SW to a guard post watched over by a dead sentry clutching a bow. GET BOW because he won't need it any more.
You now have a bow and arrow to shoot that pesky bird. Continue checking the descriptions and, when "You noticea dark bird circling high above you" appears, type FIRE ARROW then DROP BOW to get rid of it.
From the sentry return NE, N and SE to the crossroads. Now go N past the Rectory and N again to the place showing signs of a fight. Go Nback to the farmhouse and head IN and IN again back to the dead woman. Go to the E to a path between a pigsty and a stable. Go N to a farmer's field and N to a back lane. Continue E to the riverbank opposite a Water Mill. EXAMINE the NETTLES to discover a sparkling chalice. GET CHALICE.
Later in the adventure you need to put out a burning hut so head W, S, S, W, OUT and OUT back through the farmhouse. Return SW to the bend. Go S and SE to stand on the church porch. Go IN to the church and FILL CHALICE WITH WATER from the church font.
Now go OUT and N then N again. This time go SW to stepping stones leading over a river. Head E to the burning hut and THROW WATER at it. An imp will appear, swallow the water and explode, putting the fire out.
Go IN to the hut you've saved and you'll find a badly burned villager gasping for breath. He will manage to tell you that a seal has been ploughed in the field before expiring. Collecting the parts of the plough is therefore the next mission.
Go OUT then W and GET SHARE. (If you EXAMINE it you'll see that most of the blade is missing.) Now walk NE, S, E, SW, S, SW and E to Manor Field, which has been recently ploughed. GET the PLOUGH and return W, NE, N, SE then NE to a fork in the road. Here go E to the Dinham marketplace and SW into the Smithy's workshop. Here you can repair the plough.
