Acornsoft has set the shoot-'em-up flying standard with Aviator. This Spitfire does not compute. Read Review
Because of the computer's limited memory, anyone writing a flight simulator for the Beeb is forced to make some difficult choices. Some have concentrated on sophisticated navigation aids, while providing only a rudimentary cockpit display; others have included a detailed instrument panel, but few navigational aids. Some have opted for "wire frame" graphics in limited colours, to minimise the amount of memory required for the screen display. Most have written commercial aircraft simulators, neatly avoiding the complex programming problems of inverted flight and aerobatics in fighter aircraft simulations have, up to now, not provided convincing opponents for the would-be fighter ace to take on.
Recognising these shortcomings, we have tried to give you the following things in this game:
In addition, you have the flexibility to select one aspect of the game, and just play that part of it if you wish - be it combat, interception, approaches/landings or aerobatics.
We have made no attempt to hide the workings of the program from you. You are free to "LIST" it and examine it. If you manage to work out what is going on in there, perhaps you will be good enough to write and explain it all to us!
But we would remind you that the contents are subject to copyright, and that making illegal copies is the surest way to underline the livelihood of software writers and remove their incentive to produce new programs for your enjoyment.
"The gratitude of every home in our island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the World, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen, who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of world war by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
- Winston Churchill 20.8.1940
This game is respectfully dedicated to their memory.
