You'll notice fairly soon in this column that I'm not a great fan of budget software. I do understand that not everyone can afford nearly £10 for a game, but I think that the three, four or possibly even five budget games are unlikely to be worth one game of the quality of Citadel or Revs.
Enter Players, a new line in cheap and cheerful software from Interceptor which, if their first BBC release Cavey is anything to go by, could be well worth watching out for. Not that we're talking anything desperately original here - the game is a fairly oblique variant on invader themes, except this time you play a caveman, Cavey, who has to shoot down pterodactyls with spears. But don't get me wrong, Cavey contains plenty of humour, original thought and the kind of attention to detail (nicely designed titles, etc) which is unusual in budget games.
This won't keep ace programmers up all night worrying about the competition but for the price, it is excellent. Not hard to play, but with a compulsive quality and the animated pterodactyls are convincing. Whilst nowhere near Frak! in the prehistoric stakes this, like Caveman Capers, is a lot of fun.
