A collection of games from Garland for the BBC Model B.
If you type in a number of words, the computer will fit them into a word-square.
Your task is to find all the words which the computer has hidden.
Don't use more than 17 words, or words of more than 12 letters.
If you use a lot of long words, the computer may take a very long time to build the square - it may even fail altogether to fit them all in.
If you get fed up with waiting, press the ESCAPE button and the program will let you start again with a shorter list.
The screen displays a fleet of six ships placed at random on the sea, and an enemy submarine in the centre. One player takes the part of the submarine captain, and the other the part of the ship fleet commander.
The fleet commander can win the game by sinking the submarine, but the submarine captain must sink all six ships to win.
Players take alternate turns firing at the enemy, the ships firing shells, the submarine firing torpedoes. This makes the job of the fleet commander more difficult since he must get both the range and the bearing right to score a hit, whereas the submarine captain only needs to get the bearing right to sink a ship by torpedo.
To aim at any ship, enter its estimated bearing from the submarine - i.e. '0' for due North (vertically up), '90' for due East (right), '180' for due South (down), '270' for due West (left), and so on.
Any bearing between 0 and 360 degrees is permitted. You only need to enter a number each time, followed by RETURN.
Only the ship which is flashing can fire. First, you enter the estimated bearing of the submarine. Then you must estimate its range. To help you, a line representing 1000 metres is shown alongside. Again, you only need to enter a number, followed by RETURN.
Pairs is a game for two players. Each one takes it in turn to select two cards by typing in the number of the card followed by RETURN. If a pair is selected, then another go is allowed.
Each pair found increases the player's score by one. The game finishes when all cards are taken, and the winner is the person who has the most points.
To cheat, type 53.
To end game, press ESCAPE.
