In order to complete a level, you must complete the contract of patterns given at the base of the screen, within the given time limit, using identical blocks (or circles) for each individual pattern.
The number of each of the patterns to be made is given by the number (in red) against it. If you make more than the required number of each pattern, then your score will increase. The score for each of the five patterns is, from left to right: 40, 100, 75, 25 and 10. You also receive a 500 point completion bonus and time bonuses.
The title screen controls are as follows:
P - Select Number of Players
SPACE - Start Game
Up and Down Arrows - Select Start Level (provided that level has already been reached)

The game controls are as follows:
Z/X - Left/Right for Player 1
</> - Left/Right for Player 2

The Master enhanced version is supplied as a ROM image, which will respond to two *commands: *TACTIC and *TACINFO. The *TACTIC command takes you into the enhanced game, in which the screen colours change after every eight levels.
Pressing ESCAPE on the title screen, or typing *TACINFO will bring up a menu offering various self-explanatory options.

Tactic was originally included on the BBC compilation Play It Again Sam 17. It is fully Electron-compatible, although this was not remarked upon at the time.
