You are trapped inside a spooky, haunted mansion filled with valuable treasures. You can only escape by seeking out and collecting these treasures before your energy runs out. At the same time, you must avoid the dreadful monsters lying in wait to destroy you.
When the program has loaded, you are asked if you wish to use a joystick. To do so, press the Y and RETURN keys. If you prefer to use the keyboard, press the N and RETURN keys. In either case, a picture of the outside of the mansion is then displayed. After a few moments, a diagram of the ground floor (floor 1) of the mansion is shown. Your position is indicated by a small cyan-coloured man.
You can move from floor to floor via the stairs. To go upstairs, use the black and white chequered exit. To do downstairs, move towards the two white oval symbols which indicate stairs down.
For each move you make, one energy unit is deducted from your original store of 1,000 units. 100 units are deducted for each use of the stairs. To replenish the 1,000 energy units, go to the bottom right hand corner of the cellar and touch the energiser, which is depicted by a @ symbol. If your energy level sinks below 200 units, a warning siren is sounded.
The mansion contains many treasures, which are shown in green. On each floor is a candelabra worth £1,000 and on one of the four floors is a goblet worth between £5,000 and £10,000. These treasures must be collected before leaving the mansion. Caskets, which are bonus treasures, are worth £500 each, and are optional (not required in order to leave the mansion).
The number of the floor you are on is shown at the top left of the screen together with the value of goods collected. Your energy units are shown at the top right.
At all times avoid the spectres who try to destroy you: Apeman moves about on his short legs and long arms; Wolfman has pointed ears and slit-eyes; the Ghoul has a round skull and hollow eyes.
A trapdoor leads from the tower room (floor 3) out onto the side of the building. This is shown on the left-hand side of the building by two sets of vertical and horizontal bars. From here, either the first or the ground floor can be entered by aligning the man's head with the appropriate window and then moving left. Windows are shown by diagonal cross shapes. They cannot be used as exits.
A well appears in a random position on each of the floors except for the lower room, where it is always located in the same place. It is depicted by a hollow oval shape. If you fall down a well, the game ends.
When you have picked up all the required treasures, you can leave the mansion by the front door on the ground floor - indicated by two white asterisks. You can then re-enter the mansion, and can begin to collect a new set of treasures, using your remaining units of energy.
When your three lives are used up, the value of goods you have collected is shown, together with the highest value so far achieved. You are then asked if you wish to play again. To do so, press the 1 key. If you wish to end the game, press the 2 key.
A - Left, D - Right, W - Up, X - Down
You can use a joystick if you prefer.
