It is the mating season for toads - the time when, driven by their animal instincts, they must return to their breeding grounds. Their instinct is so strong that they blindly rush across roads and rivers, heedless of the dangers there. Many of them never make-it, ending up crushed by cars on the highway or drowned in rivers that they are too exhausted to swim. However, our heroes have one advantage - you will be helping them!

Using your joystick, you must first help your toad safely through the traffic on the highway; then guide him across the river by jumping onto the floating leaves, logs and turtles; and finally get him into one of the four holes on the far river bank. If you get him there safely, you get another toad, and if you manage to get four toads in the four holes you'll get another go, but next time it'll be more difficult!

There will be more and faster vehicles on the highway, until just when you think you're safe on the path between the road and the river, a toad-eating snake will come and chase you. Beware, for friendly yellow turtles and treacherous green turtles are easily confused, and what you thought was a log may turn out to be a deadly crocodile - keep away from its deadly jaws!

You start off with four toads. Points are scored for every successful hop across the road or river. Also, your bonus time, displayed at the bottom left, is added to your score every time you get a toad into a hole. You will see that the bonus gets smaller the longer you take to get the toad in the hcie, so it pays to be as quick as you can. In fact if the bonus reaches zero, you lose your toad! You can also get extra points by jumping on top of the purple female frogs which sit on the logs. But sometimes, just to fool you, they float on the water, so be careful.

Load the program as normal. There is no need to RUN it, because as soon as it has loaded it RUNs itself automatically. When the Road Toad title page is displayed, just press your FIRE button to get into the game.
