When the program has loaded you will have a ahoice whether or not to see the rules. If you select N the program will go into the menu section where you select your choice of how you wish to play. If you select Y then you will be taken through the rules, an abbreviated version is as follows:

You are in charge of a Free-Ranging Energy Devourer (F.R.E.D.). Using the game controls you must guide Fred through the maze to find food (Energy NOdules - ENOs). Beware of the carnivourous "cyclops" which will eat you if they catch you. You must also beware of the Black Holes. There are four of these in each maze, usually in approximately the same place. If you fall into one of these, you will be dumped somewhere else in the maze.

Each time you consume 50 Enos, the resulting power charge alters the colour of the cylops, allowing Fred to extract their energy.

Each time that you clear a maze of Enos, it will be refilled and you will receive 500 bonus points.

The menu section has the following options:

1. Joystick/Keyboard
2. On energy extraction, Cyclops becomes invisible/turns to stone
3. Cyclops freezes while invisible on/off
4. Cyclops moves at random/Cyclops can see/Cyclops can smell
5. Cyclops 1-4
6. Cyclops speed 1-9 or automatic speed change each time the maze is cleared (Change is always upward)
7. Single Maze/Multiple Mazes.

BREAK - Pause, CLEAR - End Game (while paused), SPACE - Restart (while paused)

On the Single/Multiple Maze option:
SPACE - Advance available mazes, CLEAR (then SPACE) - Choose
