Sleeping Gods Lie

This is a very unusual game. It has a vaguely Damocles-ish look to it - solid 3D graphics in a first person view, but that's been done before. It's got quite a nice control system, using the mouse to walk at different speeds, but that's hardly ingenious stuff.

It's not even the plot (your bog-standard 'take up magical artefact and go and save world from ultimate evil' story). No, what makes this game stand out is the world it's set in. It's not spherical, it's not even flat. The magical land of Tessera is in the shape of a tesseract or hypercube - sort of a four-dimensional cube (if you know what I mean).

Or, at least, so say the instructions. Don't worry - it's not important (unless you're some kind of obscure fact-obsessed pedantic perfectionist, of course). All you need is the normal Amiga set-up, and the ability to make instant maps inside your head - the main problem here will be finding your way about, even without the implied geometrical difficulties. It's basically a 'wander around finding places and solving puzzles to solve a greater puzzle' sort of game, with a bit of shoot-'em-up patiently waiting in the wings as well.

That said, it's a bit of a shame that the gameplay is so empty. You don't choose to pick anything up, or use it unless it's a weapon to be selected, so it's basically a case of just wandering around until something new happens. At the end of the day - it's, um, just sort of empty. Which is a pity really because, to coin a conclusion, with a bit more thought it could have been a great game.

The Bottom Line

Looks quite nice but plays like England's football team. Okay, but don't expect a revelation from God (although it might look like a revelation from Graham Taylor).
