Remember the days of 1K game packs on the ZX81? Well, those days could be about to return. James Bray brings you more...

Retro Mart: 1K Gaming

ZX81 guru Andre Baune is on the verge of releasing five new games for the ZX81 made to work in the original memory size of just 1K of RAM. These games will be pretty self explanatory by their names - Goalie, Bomb, Laser, U.F.O and Pic-Man - and will surely bring back a true wave of nostalgia to anyone who remembers the early 80s and the tape collections advertised in magazines such as Popular Computing Weekly, Computing Today and, of course, Computer & Video Games.

Being the 25th year of the formidable technology, there's a bit of a buzz about this endearing British classic. As a result, there is a 25th anniversary competition for all would-be programmers to get involved in and the winner of which will find themselves with a stock new boxed ZX81 worth $99. Full rules are available on the site, and there is a growing forum for fans of the sleek machine to join.

In related ZX news, it's become apparent that Speccy enthusiast Jonathan Cauldwell is working on a fourth Egghead game. Details will be chronicled in ZX-Shed, which is a must-read electronic media. The first two issues are already available with the third still in progress. I've also heard that ZXF may well be making a welcome return, but nothing confirmed yet. You'll read it here first if it is going to make a re-appearance.

More C64 Shooters

Shoot-'em-ups aren't exactly uncommon on the C64, with the majority of these creations made with the Shoot-'Em-Up Construction Kit, plus it's also apparently easy to create scrolling shooters on the famed 8-bit. Two such games have recently come to my attention, one from the ex-C64 coder Chris West and another from the scener Paul 'Trooper' Green.

Chris is developing a sequel to the commercial game R.I.S.K. released way back, with the release of a demo and screenshots, whilst Paul is working on Gun Storm, which according to his site is currently 21% complete. So, there's still some way to go before we'll see anything of this game. But with homebrew titles being written in the spare time of the developers, it's a case of beggars can't be choosers. I'll certainly keep you up to date on both developments. Until then, I'll recommend you to download the demo of Bomb for your favourite emulator.

Retro Website Of The Week: www.cpczone.net

This week's website is the home of CPC gaming on the net, and, without coincidence, also home to the CPC Gamebase which hopes to collect all available information on every single Amstrad CPC game ever, also allowing users to enter their own memories of their favourite and not so favourite CPC games from yesteryear. It also encourages former CPC developers, musicians and artists to get in touch to leave their own memories and provide that essential information that no-one else can.

Like all good sites too, CPCZone has a great forum which is occupied by new and old CPC enthusiasts, so if you're ever in the need to share memories or enjoy those moments of nostalgia then this site is definitely recommended.
