An old game that just can't seem to keep it up for long...
Neo Contra
Before Keanu Reeves spun through The Matrix's lobby scene, people all over the world were dodging bullets in various Contra games Until the red pill passed the back of the acting plank's gulet, the only way you could hope to experience that 'in the zone' sensation of time slowing down as to face the impossible odds of a one or two-player battle against a Contra game's endless alien armies.
Neo Contra continues the classic action, and running through the clouds of bullets with a small armoury strapped to your back can be quite a rush. When superhuman reactions take over, escaping by the skin of your teeth can leave you on the edge of your seat.
The only problem is, you won't feel like that for long. It's not that the game isn't fun, as the variation in perspectives and vehicles is a nice touch, but no amount of variety can hide the fact that it's a short game. On top of the limited content, no amount of different views can change the relentless shooting action. At times it feels like the gaming equivalent of a stuck CD. Increasing the difficulty extends the lifespan, but it still only provides a few hours of first time fun on the easy level.
Replay is encouraged through grades and unlockable extras, but it doesn't make up for a handful of repeated stages. Like a brief encounter at the office Christmas party, it's fun for a moment but lacks any long-lasting appeal.
