Mega Man Anniversary Collection

After releases on the Nintendo Gamecube and Sony PlayStation 2, Capcom's Mega Man Anniversary Collection is now available for the Microsoft Xbox (Click Here for the review of the PS2/GameCube version).

MMAC is a compilation of 10 Mega Man games; Mega Man 1-6 (originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System), Mega Man 7 (originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System), Mega Man 8 (originally released for the PlayStation) and Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters (both arcade games never before released on a home console).

As with any compilation of classic video games, an ethusiast expects at the very least a perfect pixel-for-pixel recreation of the original games. MMAC does not disappoint here, each Mega Man game looks just like it did in its original form. It would have been a nice extra, however, to be able to unlock or otherwise select from graphically enhanced remakes of the games, similar to Nintendo's groundbreaking Super Mario All-Stars collection.

Each of the games retain the same levels, enemies and bosses that made the Mega Man series so memorable. There are two new and welcome additions to the gameplay. The first is the inclusion of the character Beat from Mega Man 6, who periodically appears in Mega Man 1-6 along with an arrow pointing the way to pathways leading to useful items. The second is the appearance of an exclamation point at various challenging points in each level. While the exclamation point is on-screen, the player can hit the Back button to see a brief but helpful gameplay hint.

Perhaps some of the most memorable music in gaming has come from the Mega Man series (one need only look at the amount of Mega Man song remixes found on such sites as OverClocked Remix). That legendary music is intact, along with a lot of remixed music. Unfortunately, there is no option to choose between original and remixed music for each title; some titles only have remixed title music, while others have completely remixed music.

Of course, no good classic video game collection would be complete without some additional content, and MMAC has some interesting selections: an interview with the creator of Mega Man, a video from a Japanese Mega Man anime and original artwork from Capcom's design studios.

Overall, at a $19.99 price point, Mega Man Anniversary Collection for Xbox is a great deal for fans of the classic series, or new casual gamers looking to discover some of the best classic 2D gaming. However, a lack of selectable music and no graphical enhancements keep this game from breaking into the "A" grades. MMAC is still well-recommended for any nostalgiac or bargain gamer.
