Ah, it's the one where they drive in circles - a bastardised version of Formula One that America can call its own. But wait: it's also the one with overtaking; with speeds in excess of 230mph; with an Englishman atop the driver standings. And Indycar Series 2005 is developed in Blighty. Good Lord, it's practically ours!
The game is certainly hardcore. Even in easy mode, where crashes are penalised compassionately, it's a skilful driver whose concentration and nerve hold long enough to secure a respectable finish. But Indycar virgins need not fear. There's a lengthy tutorial hosted by Brit Dan Wheldon and, while the Danster's driving ability clearly surpasses his skills of narration, it's an engaging and useful tool.
The joy is in the differences that those little things out on the track can make. Ease off this corner or take it full on? Shift up a gear and risk losing acceleration out of the bend? Move over now or... now! Half a second off a lap over 200 laps can be the difference between first and nowhere, or between shame and honour in an online bout. Yes, they drive in ovals, but play the game and it's obvious why: it's so intense there isn't time to turn right.
