WipEout with toy cars? Wait, come back! It's actually quite good.

Hot Wheels: World Race

Rollercoaster tracks, insane speeds, a futuristic setting - yep, all the ingredients for yet another WipEout clone are here. But where this game sets itself apart is by offering vehicles based on the Hot Wheels toy range rather than a garage full of missile-toting hovercars. And, unlike most of the WipEout rip-offs littering PS2's back catalogue, this is actually a decent little racer.

The tracks register quite highly on the thrill-o-meter, with bile-inducing twists, loops, corkscrews and, most importantly, jumps. Coupled with the eye-blurring sense of speed, playing the game can be truly disorientating - you'll often find yourself craning your neck and leaning off the chair as you attempt to stay ahead of the pack.

Of course, the game isn't without its flaws (there is some slowdown and a general sense of seen-it-all-before) but, at just fifteen quid, we'd have to be more surly than Gordon Brown with a mouth ulcer to bang on about them. If you're looking for a cheap and cheerful addition to your racing collection, you could certainly do a helluva lot worse than this.

Verdict

Graphics 60%
Functional, colourful, cel-shaded goodness.

Sound 50%
Standard collection of whizzes and bangs.

Gameplay 70%
Simple and forgettable, but instantly enjoyable.

Lifespan 60%
Lots of cars, tracks and the usual game modes.

Overall 60%
A fun game with great pick-up-and-play value, if nothing much else. It's a bit like WipEout. Just not as shiny.
