Reinventing the meaning of 'abomination'

GT Racers

Right, space is limited, so let's go right for the jugular. GT Racers is an awesomely shallow, unattractive, exploitative stain of a game. Buying this shabby mess, even playing this shabby mess, constitutes a crime against decency in gaming. Don't do it.

The game lacks any depth at all. There are just five circuits - Tokyo, Berlin, London, Paris and New York - which are insultingly listed twice as they can also be raced at night. They offer no challenge either, as we won all races first time - even when playing on 'hard'.

The visuals are lazy and under-ambitious, with the city backgrounds made up of crap flat pictures of famous landmarks. The music is like those awful midi tunes that play over really bad websites - just a nasty cacophony of electronic grunts. Imagine you're listening to R2-D2 having one off the wrist and you're just about there.

And there's more, much more. Like the terrible AI, that on one occasion decided to race us in reverse. Or the slowdown, which is truly remarkable in a game so comprehensively unchallenging. Was any effort expended when dragging this mess through development? Apparently not, given that all the courses feel identical. And there's no camera showing the exterior of the car when you're driving forward.

So GT Racers is groundbreakingly bad. Please don't buy it, or rent it, or even look at it if you see it in the shops.

Verdict

Graphics 20%
Patchy, ugly, and simple. A mess.

Sound 10%
Unrealistic effects and insane soundtrack.

Gameplay 10%
Everything here has been done better.

Lifespan 10%
As in, you know, actual minutes.

Overall 10%
Short of illiteracy or raging madness, we can see no logical reason why this game should be bought. Even by accident.
