Dave Somers enhances his Filofax personal organiser with MEWsoft's Fax*File package to print custom forms and diaries.
Fax File Organiser (MEWsoft)
Described by some as a 'Yuppie Pack', MEWsoft's Fax*File Organiser is a suite of programs enabling calendars, address books, and user-defined forms to be printed out ready for insertion into any personal organiser (e.g. Filofax, Leefax, etc.). To use the software you will require an Epson compatible printer capable of double density graphics.
For your money you get a 40 or 80 track DFS format disc containing the software, a 6 page A5 instruction manual, and a sample pack of computer paper which comes pre-punched for insertion into your organiser. An ADFS compatible version is also available.
The Address Book
This allows you to create, edit, and print an address book of up to 48 entries. The format consists of 8 pages with 6 entries on each one. When editing the entries you are presented with a display of one of the pages as it will be printed. You can move a cursor over the fields and edit them as necessary. Once all the entries have been completed, they can be sorted alphabetically by surname, and saved to disc for later retrieval.
The Diary Printer
This allows you to print a diary for any year in either month-per-page or week-per-page formats. One very nice touch is the ability to have anniversaries or birthdays automatically printed alongside the appropriate date. A display is shown for each month and you can enter such messages if required.
The Forms Designer
Probably the most useful facility of all is the forms designer which enables you to design and print your own style of forms.
You are presented with a display of a form over which you can place both horizontal or vertical lines, and text in any location. Such forms can be saved to disc for later retrieval. Some useful sample forms are provided with the software.
The Extension Disc
Four extra utilities are available on an extension disc which costs £9.95 inc. p&p. They are a label printer, and a short form address program which can print on one page a list of names and telephone numbers, both of which use the address book data files, a mini-database with up to 4 fields and 60 records, and a program to print an annual calendar on a single page.
In use, Fax*File is extremely friendly, with on-screen prompts and instructions. For example, when loading a data file, selecting a non-existent one will cause a list of available files to be displayed for you to select. As a utility program for the personal organiser enthusiast I cannot fault it.
