Doctor Fox's 1991 Football Annual
Anyone who's not interested in footy can immediately switch off. Doctor Fox's 1991 Football Annual isn't, as you may think, full of pictures of Gazza and quizzes like Could You Take Gary Lineker's Place? Ooh no indeed, missus. It's actually dead serious.
It's really a massive database specifically tailored for footy fans to enter all the results from matches by one or more teams over a season, and then make predictions based on their past performance. The proggie comes with all the results of matches played up to date of dispatch - all you have to do is log in each team's as they play matches from then on. The competitions covered are Barclay's League Divisions 1 to 4, GM Vauxhall Conference, Beazer Homes League Premier Division, HFS Loans League Premier Division, Diadora Football League Premier Division and the Scottish B&Q League (Premier, First and Second Divs).
The program can display a team's matches in chronological or opponent order, or a statistical analysis of its performance. You can run a search on a team to see when they're playing and a prediction formula entered to try to foresee results.
One of the best things about the program is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. For instance, in describing the workings of the prediction section, it tells you that "With careful use this can shorten your odds of winning the pools from 1,916,767,311 to 1 down to 4,292,145 to 1." Nevertheless, it's very comprehensive and at six quid it's hardly a major loss if you don't like it. Doctor Fox live (or should that be "lives"?) at 20 Turenne Close, East Hill, London SW18 1JN.
