CART Fury Championship Racing

I don't even know where to begin with this game. Midway has always been good at making games that aren't exactly mainstream, as NBA Jam and NFL Blitz cleared the path for games like Hydro Thunder and Artic Thunder. They took the sports part and made them fun and exciting. C.A.R.T Fury though, well, lets just say, the game should be used as a beverage coaster.

I was excited when I first saw the screenshots for the game, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I can tell you I feel cheated out of the cash that I used to pay for it. I haven't played such a disgraceful game on the PlayStation 2 to date, until now. The first time I load it up, I wait... And wait... and wait. I think Midway forgot that gamers have become very impatient with load times, and this is one of the game's worst features. I counted, one time, a load time of about 55 seconds between playing the actual game and game menus. This far along into the PS2's life, this is completely unacceptable. Midway really should've paid more attention to the issue.

Gameplay wise, Midway never skimps. This is about the only place where I give the game any replay value. It's loaded with extra cars, hidden mini-games and a load of tracks. Now unlocking all those won't be worth your time, but you can if you wish to endure the torture. The game has its standard modes: Arcade, Simulation, Career Mode and options and secrets. The career mode I cleared in about 30 minutes thanks to the gimp AI. I'll talk more about that later.

Getting onto actually playing the game, I was completely taken by the fact that Midway didn't properly implament the "dual-shock" code. Seriously, it didn't work for the first two days of playing it. Then, all the sudden, it started working randomly. I turned it on just yesterday and it worked perfectly. This is a serious fault of the game because you don't feel what you're playing.

The Driving physics are completely unrefined and lack the tight control that is needed to play the game. That tied with the enemy car AI that is completely useless and doesn't provide an adequate challenge even on any level, the gameplay sinks faster than the titanic.

Lastly the sounds of the game are probably the most annoying sounds since... well ever! The music sounds like a metal reject band that can't really sing, and the racing sounds absolutely lack the intensity that a F1 game should have.

If you couldn't already tell, I didn't like C.A.R.T Fury much. Midway has produced some high quality products over the past year and they are slated to come out with over 40 games for various consoles this year and next. I hope they get their act together and produce better products than C.A.R.T. Fury. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up at all costs.
