Repton 3

The 'Repton' character needs no introduction to Beeb games players. Now our hero has wandered onto the Archimedes and I put him through his paces.

On loading the game, you are presented with the main options just as in the BBC version. For those who have not played any of the Repton games, the object is to collect diamonds from a maze. Not as easy as it sounds, as rocks, spirits and monsters are all out to take revenge.

It's disappointing that there's no difference in either gameplay or sprites between the BBC and Arc version. Although it uses one of the Arc's high resolution modes, it plays as if in Mode 2 on the BBC!

Along with the original Repton 3 screens, sets of screens for Around The World, The Life Of Repton, Repton Thru Time and the usual screen and character editor are included. That's a total of 144 different screens with some very complex puzzles. The only additions are four tunes - and a number of bugs.

I also found the screen and character editor very unpredictable. It has a useful feature where you can test out your own screens without having to save to disc first. However, I have on occasion 'lost' all my screens and characters for no apparent reason. The transporters which take you to a different area of screen were also very hard to make use of.

Extra features included are a save position, more colours and higher resolution. If the prices of the game and the extra screens were added up on a Beeb, the price would come to £33.80. So £20 for this set and the extra features make it good value despite the annoying bugs.
