EUG has a new editor!

As you should all know if you received your mail, Will has handed over the EUG mantle to 'Gus Donnachaidh.

All submissions and subscriptions should be sent to this address. EUG now has its own bank account. In future, all cheques should be made out to EUG.

Richard Dimond remains as Deputy Editor of the magazine. His services will continue to be of benefit to us all.

Derek Walker has given up his responsibilities for handling subscriptions. His work has been great benefit to Will and EUG. He remains a valued member.

Will Watts, previous editor of EUG, is to be made an honourary member in recognition of his services in establishing the group. The granting of honourary membership should not be casual, I believe, and should not be given automatically to every retiring editor but rather to those who have shown a commitment to EUG. Will clearly fits this criterion.

When I write to any member personally, I always save the file with the month, date and the name. i.e. 6/27Joe for June or A/27Joe for October.

ADFS will only allow me a name of up to six characters long using this method. I used to get around this by using abbreviations and relying on the date as a reference when recalling a file. With so many different names, this probably won't work now. Do any members have any objections to the use of personal membership numbers?

It could be something like this: two letters indicating the member, followed by the EUG order code you already have, A or D for the disk type, 3 or 5 for the size of disk then the number of subscriptions you have outstanding. i.e. XXA310 or XXD510. Clearly the last two numbers will change with each issue or subscription payment.

If there are no objections, this will be implemented next issue. The identification codes will be allocated randomly unless you have some particular objection to any two letters.

The Electron is the true chameleon of computers. In its basic guise, it is a 32K machine into which you plug a tape player, TV and power supply. Numerous addons have been made to expand its performance and users simply buy the ones they want.

For a trial period, those without disks who might like to receive EUG on tape may do so. Tapes are of course more expensive. A good quality C90 costs about £1.30. If EUG supplies the tape, then the price of each issue on tape would have to reflect this. So if any Elk owner is without a disk drive and wants EUG on tape at the moment, send a good quality C90 with your cheque and name and address.

If there is enough demand, I will look into the possibility of buying tape in bulk at a saving; the same way as I do with disks now.
