ZX Larry is a point and click adventure by Rafal Miazga which received 11th place (11,306 points) in the 2018, ZX DEV MIA remakes contest. It's a remake of a Brazilian Graphic Adventure Creator game for the Spectrum, called Larry, which was itself inspired by the original Leisure Suit Larry In The Land of the Lounge Lizards game for various systems by Sierra On-Line.
The basic idea is that you're a sad and lonely forty year-old who decides to move out of his mum's house and head off to the big city to find some... er... romance. In the beginning you find yourself outside of Lefty's Bar, probably not the best place to find romance but it's a start. You can click on commands from a list that include Go, Look, Take, Give, Talk and Use. These help you interact with people and things in each scene and you can add items in your inventory. Story text and conversations appear in the bottom right of the screen. Your score is shown on the bottom left.
Graphics are quite detailed and sometimes amusing. Audio consists of a single jolly, unintrusive and catchy tune and minimal spot effects that work very well.
ZX Larry retains the humour of the original but does away with most of the naughty stuff. So no messing around with Sam Fox and a deck of cards in this neck of the woods. It contains most of the puzzles from the original which is no mean feat cramming that into a Spectrum. Worth a look in my book.
Note: Some early versions of this game feature a cursor which was incredibly difficult to control. Look for a patched version!
