Windscale is a BASIC program for the Colour Genie. The rather hard-to-believe scenario is that some nuclear reactors have gone haywire and you must defuse them... by running over them with a tank!

The game initially asks you how many reactors (0-9) and how many tanks (lives) you would like. Further, a skill level is required (1-3), but this does not seem to make much difference to the game!

You are then presented with a display of reactors (solid blocks) and radioactive waste (spotted blocks). The tank (solid block with a stick out of the end) can then be moved about the screen using the arrow keys. What you have to do is run over all the nuclear reactors without running into the nuclear waste. The tank, which must use nuclear fuel, leaves a scattered trail of radioactive waste. Thus, the more you move about, the more obstacles you have to avoid. The skill level (previously mentioned) only seems to increase the probability of the tank dropping nuclear waste.

The game itself is fun to play initially but soon loses its appeal once you have (easily) mastered it. The graphics are unimpressive because they merely consist of graphics characters unimaginatively used in text mode. The sound is poor considering the impressive sound hardware found within the Colour Genie. This is the type of program one would find listed within a computer magazine, not for retail sale.
