Total Game Boy
28th November 2000Play your cards right and you could be numero Uno (ha ha)!
Uno
Playing a card game on a Game Boy is a strange experience, particularly if you've played the game before. At first you miss the friendly banter of real-life team mates, but after playing for a while you realise that it is preferable - no arguments!
All card games played by hand seem to result in disagreements with fellow players, so it is actually an advantage having no-one to fall out with. Uno is a well thought-out game. Playing it in this medium enables you to play anywhere at any time and you don't need friends! Eat your heart out, Billy-No-Mates! The game has some great graphics and increasingly interesting backgrounds as you progress though.
Point Thieves
To win and get to the next level you need to dispose of your cards first. However, play can be reversed so that you miss a turn, and the cards may also dictate that you pick up even more. This doesn't help you to win, because the object of the game is to collect the points from your opponents' cards. When you have got rid of all of your cards you have won the round.
The score is obtained by totalling the sums of your opponents' hands. There are many different types of cards, particularly as you develop through the game. The variation within the cards adds interest. The major pain with Uno is a rather annoying card that appears whenever a draw four is played, which does nothing to enhance the game. On the contrary, it holds up gameplay and makes things very frustrating.
Overall, Uno makes a refreshing change on the Game Boy Color. It's a game that works well on your own or with others.
