TWIN KINGDOM VALLEY Header

There were few BBC/Electron adventures as revered as Trevor Hall's Twin Kingdom Valley. It was released by Bug Byte, both as a full price game and as a budget one, and also appeared on Beau Jolly's Five Star Games compilation,
which was the first place that I saw it (back in 1986).

The valley is home to two feuding kings, the Forest King and the Desert King, and all manner of fairytale creatures;
many of whom will literally stab you so much as look at you.

The instructions inform all would-be adventurers that they should attempt to accumulate 1,024 points.
Even now I've solved this adventure, I haven't managed this.

What we present here therefore is what we consider to be the complete solution.

We have tried to simplify the walkthrough by including all the graphics used to depict certain places.
If you stray from the instructions, type PICTURE to show your location, and then find it in our walkthrough.

All of the screenshots can be displayed full size by simply clicking them.

Note that, on top of everything else, some of the guards and elves wander randomly around various locations. They have a nasty habit of 'showing up' with knives, axes and staffs and hurling them at you before you've had time to get to the armoury and chosen your weapons. If you are unlucky enough to have this happen to you, it's best to move immediately out of the location and try and make your way to Watersmeet, where you should SWIM to restore your health.
 
 
ON A ROAD
 
From the starting location, go NORTH.
 

INSIDE A WOODEN CABIN
Your cabin is the location where you need to bring the treasures from the game. It currently contains some very useful equipment so GET LAMP, GEY KEY, GET JUG. Now go SOUTH and West

ON A ROAD
Go West

IN A DISUSED FLINT QUARRY
In this location, GET FLINT. Then retrace your steps EAST and NORTH

IN A CLEARING
In the clearing, OPEN GRATE. We will go down it later. For now, go NORTH into the forest

BY A STREAM
Go NORTH

BY A NARROW RIVER
Go NORTH

BY A DEEP RIVER
At the river, FILL JUG, then go West

AT THE END OF A WINDING TRAIL

ON A STEEPLY SLOPING TRAIL

ON THE CANYON FLOOR
During the next five moves, you may encounter an elf with an axe. Don't fight him at this point because he has got an axe, and you have got nothing - just leg it past him. So, with that in mind, go West

Go West one more time, and you will arrive at Watermeet

AT WATERSMEET
SWIM in the magical rivers and you will feel "strangely healthy". Have a DRINK of the river as well and the same strange magic will reveal the secret of "concealed doors" to you. Then go EAST and turn the lamp ON before continuing NORTH

IN A CAVE
Go NORTH and GET the HOLDALL (This is very useful for doubling your inventory storage!) then go SOUTH (into a sloping maze) then SOUTH again.

Back in the cave, GET DIAMOND (which is worth eighty points) and then go EAST

IN A SMALL BEDROOM
You're now re-tracing your steps so pictures will appear less frequently. Go EAST

IN A SMALL SITTING ROOM
Go SOUTH

IN A SMALL KITCHEN
GET the gold KEY then go NORTH, WEST, WEST and SOUTH to leave the cave system. Turn the lamp OFF.

Now type FILL HOLDALL and answer Y to each of the items in your inventory, except for the lamp. (If you accidentally put it in the holdall, EMPTY HOLDALL, GET all the items again and FILL HOLDALL without it!) Once again, you might have to run past an angry elf during the next few moves EAST, EAST, EAST, EAST and SOUTH. Turn the lamp ON. Go SOUTH

IN A CAVE
Go West

IN THE HALL OF THE FOREST KING
You will encounter a guard and need to GIVE DIAMOND TO GUARD. In return, he will give you an amulet that recognises you as one of the finest of the Forest King's serfs. Return NORTH then turn the lamp OFF. Go EAST, EAST and SOUTH

WANDERING THROUGH THE WOODS
Go SOUTH

AT THE TOP OF A STEEP SCREE SLOPE
Go WEST, EAST and NORTH. Then turn the lamp ON and go DOWN

IN A NARROW PASSAGE
Go DOWN again

IN A ROOM
In this room, you will discover a crystal ball. GET BALL. (You can also LOOK BALL for a nice illustration too!). Go NORTH

IN A ROOM
Go West

IN A PASSAGE
GET ROD.

Now you need to head into the twisty maze of passages, so go DOWN, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, EAST, SOUTH and SOUTH. You'll now encounter a witch with a bronze key. You should GIVE BALL TO WITCH in exchange, then head EAST, EAST, SOUTH and NORTH back to the door again.

Now OPEN DOOR and go West through it (back into the cave), and DOWN

IN A NARROW SHAFT
Go DOWN again

IN A DAMP HOLLOW CHAMBER
Go NORTH

IN A DANK MUSTY PASSAGE

Pause to OPEN the gold DOOR here and go NORTH again

IN A ROOM
Now go EAST

IN A SHORT PASSAGE
OPEN yet another DOOR (a bronze one this time) here and a princess will come running out. Her daddy, quite handily, is the Forest King and she will go and tell him of your heroics, so that if you now go and find him, by going WEST, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, UP, UP and West, he will give you a silver key.

Retrace your steps EAST, DOWN, DOWN, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH

IN A DAMP HALL
And UP

IN A POKEY ANTEROOM
There may be a guard here with a bag of silver. You need this silver but, as you don't have any weapons yet, head NW to the armoury

IN A LARGE HALL
Go West

IN A PASSAGE
You'll be faced with another locked door. OPEN DOOR and go West through it

IN THE ARMOURY
You will now be in the armoury and from here on in the adventure gets a lot more interesting because you can actually have fights with many of the characters, and win without relying on them to drop their weapons. Just TAKE the SWORD and TAKE the AXE, so that you still have some inventory space.

Go EAST and CLOSE DOOR - this prevents nasties from following you. Have a fight with the guard who is carrying a bag of silver (if he's there), then go EAST again and UP

IN A SMALL ROOM
Turn the lamp OFF and go West

IN A PASSAGE
Go West and West again

IN THE CASTLE ENTRANCE HALL
Then head UP

ON THE DRAWBRIDGE
You are now heading into the desert to retrieve a bag of silver from a sand lurker. Go SOUTH

TO THE NORTH OF A DEEP CANYON
Go West

BY A CLIFF TOP
And go West again

ON THE EDGE OF A DEEP FISSURE
Now it's time to perform a little magic. WAVE ROD

A crystal bridge will appear. You should now go SOUTH

ON THE CRYSTAL BRIDGE
And SOUTH again

ON THE SOUTH EDGE OF A DEEP FISSURE
And SOUTH a third time towards a forest path

WANDERING THROUGH THE WOODS
You will now be wandering through the woods again. Go SOUTH

ON TOP OF SOME JAGGED ROCKS
Go SOUTH, EAST, West, SE, EAST and NORTH back to your wooden cabin. DROP the AMULET and DROP the ROD here.

You are now heading back to the steeply sloping trail, which is SOUTH, West, NORTH (to the clearing) and NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, WEST, WEST and NORTH. Go DOWN onto the canyon floor then WEST, WEST, WEST and West. Turn your lamp ON and go NORTH into the cave

IN A CAVE
Go EAST, NORTH, EAST, NORTH and NORTH then OPEN DOOR. Go NORTH through it

IN A DUNGEON
You will now be in a dungeon and are about to encounter an ill giant. If you cure him, he will help you despatch many of the tougher opponents in the valley. Go SOUTH and WAIT. He will turn up. Now you need to lead him to Watermeet: WEST, WAIT, SOUTH, WAIT, WEST, WAIT, WEST, WAIT, WEST, WAIT and SOUTH. Turn the lamp OFF (If it has died in the meantime, it's not a problem). SWIM then go EAST. Then turn the lamp ON again

IN A NARROW FISSURE
WAIT for the giant - because it's nice to have his help (particularly if the lamp has died, in which case you need him!). He needs a weapon. I tend to GIVE SWORD TO GIANT, although you could give him the axe, or any other weapon you might find. Now go NORTH, WAIT, EAST, WAIT, EAST, WAIT, EAST, WAIT, NORTH, WAIT, NORTH, WAIT, UP, WAIT, NW, WAIT, UP, WAIT, WEST, WAIT, WEST, WAIT, WEST, WAIT, UP and WAIT

IN THE CASTLE ENTRANCE HALL
Turn the lamp OFF, assuming it's still lit. Now go EAST. You don't need to bother waiting for the giant any longer - you can pick him up on the return route

IN THE DINING HALL
Go NORTH

IN A KITCHEN
Go West

IN A WORKSHOP
You will now be in the workshop. FILL LAMP then go SOUTH

IN THE STUDY
GET the bag of SILVER then go EAST

IN THE CASTLE ENTRANCE HALL
Turn the lamp ON. You are about to complete a long progression of moves during which you may encounter the giant or guards. If you encounter guards, you should kill them if they have silver on them. Every five moves or so after you meet the giant, you should WAIT so he can catch up with you. Got that? Good, so go DOWN, EAST, EAST, EAST, DOWN, DOWN, SE, DOWN, WEST, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, UP and UP.

Now go EAST and EAST and OPEN the bronze DOOR. Go EAST again

ON A LANDING
A dwarf wth a diamond ring hangs around the landing. If he is not there, WAIT and HIT DWARF WITH HAMMER when he does turn up.

Go DOWN

ON A SPIRAL STAIRCASE
Go DOWN again

IN A SMALL CHAMBER
You will be in a small chamber with a bag of gold. FILL HOLDALL and make sure all the keys are in it, and the bag of silver you collected earlier. If you have excess weapons, discard them. Then GET BAG of gold.

Now go UP, UP, WEST, WEST, WEST, DOWN, DOWN, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, UP, UP and West. WAIT for the giant then go UP, WEST, WEST, WEST and UP to the Castle Entrance Hall again

IN THE CASTLE ENTRANCE HALL
Turn OFF the lamp then go West and NORTH. FILL LAMP again, just to be on the safe side. Then go SOUTH, EAST and UP

ON THE GRAND STAIRCASE
Go UP

ON THE LANDING
On the landing, go West

IN A CORRIDOR
OPEN the silver DOOR here, then go West

IN THE WEST TOWER
And UP

IN THE WEST TURRET
In the west turret, you should GET STAFF (a very valuable weapon) and go DOWN, EAST, NE and NORTH

IN THE NORTH TOWER
Now go UP

IN THE NORTH TURRET
The dragon can be impaled with one move if you HIT DRAGON WITH STAFF. (If the Desert King starts stabbing you with a knife you might as well whack him too!) After the carnage, keep typing DROP KEY until you have discarded all of the keys you've been carrying around. Then GET MASTER KEY.

Now go DOWN, SOUTH and SE

IN A CORRIDOR
Go NORTH

IN THE THRONE ROOM
In the throne room, you will find a ball of gold. DROP HAMMER and GET BALL, which gives you 65 points. Then go SOUTH and EAST

IN THE EAST TOWER
Go UP in the East Tower

IN THE EAST TURRET
There is an evil witch in here so HIT WITCH WITH STAFF to kill her. If the staff does not fall down, DROP STAFF. You now need to FILL HOLDALL. You can put everything in it apart from the lamp. DROP any weapons at all now then GET GOLD STAFF (worth 100 points) - oh, and you can use this to despatch any other evil-doers.

Go DOWN, WEST and SW

IN A CORRIDOR
From the corridor, OPEN the locked DOOR then go NE and NW. You will be back on the landing again and you are now making your way back to the steeply sloping trail again. So, go DOWN and DOWN again. Turn the lamp ON. Continue DOWN, EAST, EAST, EAST, DOWN, EAST, DOWN, WEST, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, UP, UP, NORTH and then turn the lamp OFF

ON A STEEPLY SLOPING TRAIL
From the trail, you need to get back to your cabin: EAST, SOUTH, SOUTH, WEST, EAST, EAST and NORTH. EMPTY HOLDALL here and type SCORE. If you have followed this solution correctly, it will be 240 and you will have collected the ball of gold, the bag of gold and a bag of silver. GET the JUG and make sure you are only carrying the gold staff, the master key, the flint, the jug and the holdall

INSIDE A WOODEN CABIN
Now you need to go all the way back to the castle. Back to the trail is, of course, SOUTH, WEST, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NW, WEST and DOWN

ON A STEEPLY SLOPING TRAIL
Turn the lamp ON and go all the way back to the landing, fighting off anyone you meet along the way: SOUTH, DOWN, DOWN, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, UP, NW and UP

IN THE SMALL ROOM
If you don't get attacked, you'll now be at the Small Room. If the last sequence got a bit muddled up due to various baddies hurling knifes at you etcetera, then find the Small Room now. Then go WEST, WEST, WEST and UP. Turn the lamp OFF. Go UP and UP again. You're now heading back to the palace's South Turret to collect the famous treasure chest so go SW into the corridor and SOUTH

IN THE SOUTH TOWER
Go UP

IN THE SOUTH TURRET
You will need to FILL HOLDALL with everything you are carrying now, then DROP HOLDALL so that you have enough room to GET the CHEST (worth 175 points).

Take the chest, through all the locations that you previously had a lamp to illumiate: DOWN, EAST, EAST, EAST, DOWN, EAST, DOWN, WEST, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, UP, UP, NORTH and DOWN. You will probably be dry so have a refreshing DRINK

ON THE CANYON FLOOR
Go WEST, WEST, WEST, WEST, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, EAST and EAST

IN A LARGE HOLLOW CHAMBER
In this secret room, you should DROP CHEST and GET SECRET. Now head back to your cabin: WEST, WEST, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, EAST, EAST, EAST, EAST, SOUTH, EAST, SOUTH, SOUTH, WEST, EAST, EAST and NORTH. DROP SECRET here

INSIDE A WOODEN CABIN
Now you have to go all the way back to the secret room to get the chest: SOUTH, WEST, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, WEST, WEST, NORTH, DOWN, WEST, WEST, WEST, WEST, NORTH, NORTH, NORTH, EAST, EAST, GET CHEST, WEST, WEST, SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH, EAST, EAST, EAST, EAST, SOUTH, EAST, SOUTH, SOUTH, WEST, EAST, EAST, NORTH, DROP CHEST. Type SCORE and you will have 515
