The Coffee Break Shootout & Total Refill

Here is an interesting 'twin pack' from Psytronik - available as a digital download, budget disk, Premium Plus disk, standard tape or limited edition clamshell tape.

Developer: Stephan Katteneder

These are the first commercial releases from Stephan Katteneder, who got in touch with Jason Mackenzie at Psytronik. Jason recruited Saul Cross to provide music. Stephan says that Coffee Break Shootout was inspired by an old web game (Moorhuhn / Moorhen, originally designed to advertise a whisky brand) and Total Refill was based on his friend Chris who works as a barman.

Gameplay

In Coffee Break Shootout, flocks of birds fly past and the player has to line them up in their sights to shoot them. The catch is that each bird needs two hits to take it down, with the bird speeding up after the first hit. Mouse or joystick can be used to control the crosshairs.

In Total Refill, Chris the bartender has to look after Knocker's bar. Arrows show when a punter is thirsty and needs their glass refilled, so Chris goes over to the beer pumps to fill a glass by holding fire. The longer fire is pressed, the more beer goes into the glass. However, the barrel under the pumps only holds so much beer, so when that turns red Chris must pick up the empty barrel and carry it to the cellar steps where he can pick up a new, full barrel. But he mustn't neglect his customers or they get angry.

A meter above a customer's head flashes when they are out of ale, and when this meter falls to empty it costs the player one life.

Likes

I do like the different backgrounds in Coffee Break Shootout and the animation of the birds (which remind me of the blackbird found in Ultimate classic Entombed). Mouse control is definitely the best way to play.

Total Refill has echoes of Tapper and a unique look with its large sprites. This twin pack does make sense, as neither game has enough depth to stand alone.

Dislikes

The first few games of Coffee Break Shootout I found to be quite hard, but then it started to become easier. Total Refill was exceptionally hard to get into, with the demanding customers quickly costing me a life.

Verdict

Worth a shot or two!
