Put the pedal to the metal!

Test Drive 6

For a Game Boy title, Test Drive 6 has a surprising amount of sponsorship behind it. Amongst the manufacturers featured are Audi, Lotus, TVR and even Dodge - yes, now you can have complete control over the Dodge Viper in the palm of your hand! This, alas, doesn't make much difference when it comes to playing the game, because although the Car Selection screen shows accurate enough representations, that's where the dream ends!

Aside from the sponsored cars, Test Drive 6 luckily has just enough playability to make it worth a look. This style of isometric racer may be a little out of date, even on Game Boy, but it is still surprisingly fun to play. Not only can you have your pick of several cars but you can also upgrade them with points, which are won after each race throughout the numerous tournaments on offer. Don't worry though, because as well as being a serious racer, this game also manages to retain that all-important arcade element. Whilst racing, you will encounter fallen trees, stationary cars and some big air ramps! To top it all, you can even buy turbo power-ups at the end of each race.

What does let this game down, however, is the handling. The cars themselves control perfectly - that is, until you turn and the car begins to drift out, almost as if it were performing a powerslide. This is a small gripe, though, and with enough practice, driving the cars will become second nature. Recommended for dedicated driving fans only.
