Sophia II

Not content with saving the day in her previous outing, Sophia returns after evil has penetrated the land under the baneful guidance of the Grim Reaper. Our young enchantress has to navigate through three locations in her quest to thwart this malevolent intent.

The first level is a top-down Gauntlet-inspired dungeon where she must find artefacts and runes to allow her to progress. The objects are in random placements, so each playthrough is different.

The second level is an underwater level where it gives more an illusion of side-on, but essentially works with the same mechanics (minus the gravity).

Sophia II

The third and final level is more of a traditional platformer which is the highlight of the game; proving more of a fun challenge than anything that came prior. At the end of each of these levels is a delightful boss fight - albeit not very challenging.

The graphics are very lovely but the game simply gets boring and repetitive after a while and doesn't really drive the player on to completion.

The music is the game's weakest feature - it just feels like a mishmash of uninspiring classical music renditions. Apparently, this is a re-imagining of Matthew (Manic Miner) Smith's Styx. I think I'll stick with the original. Fun enough, but not one I'd return to in a hurry. Don't fear the reaper!
