This game could not be more like the real thing. The realistic table fills almost the whole screen with a scoreboard squeezed in at the top and an arrow to indicate whose turn it is. A green strip at the bottom represents the cache in which the balls are collected when potted. All the normal rules of snooker apply. Using the Z, X, :, / keys manoeuvres and extends the cue; the longer it is, the harder the shot.

The actual shot is played by pressing one of three keys: S plays the cue ball normally, B imparts backspin and T topspin.

Once a red has been potted the player selects and confirms the colour of the ball he wishes to attempt. For anyone who takes an interest in the game of snooker, this version should prove most enjoyable. Some of the rebounds during play are not entirely true to life; you'll have to go down the local club for that. Given that, the program offers a very good game in its own right with unobtrusive but effective sound effects and an excellent use of the BBC colour palette although the pink and brown were not as distinct as one could have hoped. The most encouraging aspect of the game is the direct way in which you line up the shots, rather than keying in co-ordinates which can be a bit of a chore.

Snooker is a very addictive game and this on-screen version will prove just as grabbing.
