Quartet

Face changing tetris style game Quartet received third place in the MSX Classic category of last years MSX DEV’18 contest. The face changing puzzle game first appeared on the C16/C64 back in 2017 with the action packed and option overloaded Assembloids.

Now that was and still is a great game to play, so how does this MSX version stack up? Unfortunately it's not as good as the Commodore games. It's not a bad game at all on the MSX, it's still quite fun, the graphics are cool, the sound effects fine, gameplay and playability fine also, it's just not as good or fun to play as the C16 / C64 versions. The main reason is that it doesn’t include all the cool options that the Commodore versions have. This MSX DEV'18 version only has one game option and the timing of the clock to replace and figure out where you want the next face part to go is much shorter in length which is frustrating.

But it still remains a very good game - though, with just one game option, you will become bored quite easily. If the game had more staying power and more options then I would have given it a much higher score because I love what the developers have done with the presentation and it's such an addictive game to play.

With the help of Reprofactory, Quartet released a new version of the game on cartridge for xmas 2019. The new features on the physical edition include three extra face sets, a training mode, a secret bonus, a two player co-op mode and a new credits screen. The price for this cartridge version is version is €30 (+shipment). The physical version would be a fantastic improvement of the version I was able to play.
