Proteans is a fast and furious version of the old arcade favourite Galaxians, in which you have to fight off the noisy swooping aliens with your rapid-firing laser.
The scenario in this case has you landing on the planet of Pelagova, whereupon you are viciously attacked by hordes of Proteans dropping their deadly Grycon bombs.
These Proteans really are very nasty customers: they fire so quickly that it takes a long time before you get through to even the second wave.
Even more alarming than their firing speed is the Proteans' habit of coming down to the ground and settling if you don't finish them off quickly enough.
After a brief rest, they return to the sky leaving an impenetrable stream of Crycon bombs - quicker reflexes than mine are needed to contend with this kind of thing!
The Proteans themselves are Invader-type creatures in a variety of bright primary colours. When excited, they like to twitch their claw-like legs in anticipation of blowing you to the four corners of the screen.
They come in nine slightly different forms and 36 different levels of difficulty; I frankly admit that the higher levels of the game remain a mystery to me.
The exceptional speed of this game, together with its ear-splitting sound and sharp graphics, make Proteans a challenging version of an old favourite.
