Play It Again Sam 10

As usual four games are included. Re-released are Zalaga, 3D Dotty, Repton Thru Time and a new game called Qwak!

Repton Thru Time, for those who have just returned from being stranded on a desert island for four years, is a maze game. It features a reptile collecting objects from a scrolling maze to complete one of many levels. This game has Repton going through different stages of time: prehistoric, Victorian etc. The game includes a maze and sprite editor. This will hopefully see the end of the Repton series but somehow I doubt it. All the Repton games are entertaining and worth playing, and this is no exception.

The next game of interest is the excellent Zalaga by Orlando. This is a close copy of an arcade shoot-'em-up with a similar name and is fast and furious fun. Sprite movement is jerky but this is due to the speed of movement and the amount of objects on screen. Thankfully it does not detract from the gameplay too much. On the Electron version the sprites move in even greater jumps and this is very off-putting. It is still worth a play and, if you like obliterating sprites, is quite satisfying to play.

Good use of colours produces a realistic 3D effect in 3D Dotty. This is a sort of Pac-Man game but with three levels of dots to collect. Snake-like things slide around and, if they get under your feet, they sap your energy. Ladders connect the three levels and snakes cannot move up or down them. This type of game is always addictive because it is simple to play and there is always the chance you will do a little bit better on your next go. Again, this game is worth having.

The best game in the bunch has to be Qwak! Designed and coded by Jamie Woodhouse, it is very addictive and great fun. The object of the game is to jump around a screen, collect keys and leave via a door. This may be a cliched idea, but the implementation is perfect!

The graphics are smoothly animated and the controls are responsive. The visuals are effective, good use of colour makes for a "cute" look to the characters. I found the Electron version more playable than the BBC because it is slightly slower. This allowed me to get further into the game. While playing you have to avoid touching any baddies or spikes. One original feature is the use of bubbles to carry you up the screen. You cannot die by falling from a height which was one thing that I always hated about games like Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy. All in all, this game is worth the cover price of the compilation alone and with the others Play It Again Sam 10 is worth every penny. Get it now!
