Are the old games really the best?
Konami Collection No. 4
They always say the old games are the best. Forget graphics, it's the gameplay that counts, right? It seems that Konami is determined to prove all those ideals wrong by dishing out another one of its 'classic' collection carts! Like the previous three, it takes all those nearly long forgotten games that used to take half an hour to load on a Spectrum and giftwraps them for the Game Boy audience.
Fabulous Four?
Thrown into the mix this time around is Gradius 2, Belmont's Revenge, Yie Ar Kung-Fu and Antarctic Adventure. This motley crew of games range from platform action through shoot-'em-up to penguin racing madness and there's even a bit of kick chop fun at the end!
It's strange, but when these games originally did the rounds they seemed to be a lot more fun. This time though, the gameplay has been stripped naked and left humiliated for everyone to point at. The only game left with any dignity is Belmont's Revenge (a sequel to CastleVania) which, although awkward and jerky, still offers some kind of challenge! With the other games, chances are you'll be bored before you even start.
Second Opinion
The conversion to colour is surprisingly what shows how dated these games are, proving that some things don't survive green-screen technology!
Like most trips back to Nostalgia Street, the journey never seems to be worth it in the long run and only seems to ruin whatever happy memories we had of our old gaming experiences!
