The Game Boy has gone soccer mad, and this is the best of the bunch!

Golden Goal

Phew! That's not the final whistle, but we wish it was, because this month has seen the influx of three (count 'em) football games on Game Boy Color! We're just a bit out of breath, what with all this dashing around the pitch chasing an inflated cow's bladder.

Golden Goal does what our perky little handheld appreciates the most, in providing a simple graphical interface and loading it with playability. The overhead perspective, which is very reminiscent of the classic old Amiga game Sensible Soccer (we're sure you've heard of it) works a treat, but when there are more than half-a-dozen players in view at the same time, it can chug along a bit.

The important thing is that the game works well in the one-player mode and there are an astonishing 52 teams from five continents to choose from and alter team tactics. From the main menu, players can choose to play in a friendly or go for glory in the Tournament. The Game Boy's brain takes care of who you're drawn against and if you want to pop off for a cuppa halfway through there's a save game option, too.

They're all international teams, so you can help England qualify for the finals - now there's a thing! On screen, the players can head, volley and even use after-touch to confuse other player and, of course, the opposing goalie. Golden Goal kicks most of the opposition into touch in the gameplay stakes. Go on, stick your boot in!

Second Opinion

Being a portable little gem it is, the Game Boy Color will allow you to play this to the extreme. Complementing the Game Boy perfectly is the enjoyability factor of the proceedings.

Obviously, it is nothing on the real thing, but for some handheld footie action you'd be hard pushed to find something as satisfying. The game is beautifully presented (if a tad tiny) and you can play as any of the top premier sides.

It's a cool top down perspective too which works far better than other Game Boy footie games. Nice one!
