What We Said Then

Jaz: The game itself is an exact (and I mean exact) copy of the arcade original bar two things - there are a couple of extra levels added onto the end of the game!

Golden Axe

Matt: Nothing beats a great beat-'em-up, and this is one of the best I've seen.

What We Say Now

Jaz: This is a great game, but looking back I think we were over-generous. It's too easy to complete, and once you've been through it a couple of times it gets a bit dull. Playability 87%, lastability 79% and overall 83% would be about the right marks now.

Rich: Golden Axe is still a pretty good laugh a couple of years on, but I couldn't help getting bored of the game after a while. Perhaps it's because I've played so many games of the same ilk on other systems over the last couple of years. I'd put presentation up a couple of points, sound down to 80% and playability and lastability down to 88%. Overall, I'd probably award it 88%. It's tons better than Golden Axe II, but Streets Of Rage is still the best Megadrive beat-'em-up.
