At last - Chess for the Colour Genie! It is based on Sargon II chess with super graphics to boot. Readers will want to know if it plays a good game. The answer is yes! There are four levels that the computer plays on. The easiest takes about half a minute to make a move on average, the highest level can take up to an hour!!

There are some special features - you can get the computer to play itself or you can play against it. Also, you can save a part-played game to tape. A great feature is that you can lay the pieces out yourself and carry on playing from there. So if you are losing, you can knock off the computer's Queen before continuing!

You always have the option to play white or black. The computer does have a set of opening moves for whatever colour it plays. Throughout play, the last 20 moves or so are displayed on screen. Moves are entered as coordinates (e.g. E2-E4). Castling, en passant, etc are all catered for, and the instruction sheet explains about this, and all the other features.

In conclusion, Gumboot Chess is a great version of computer chess which will really please the chess players in our ranks.
