Gremlin turned out some real stunners last year and has now been awfully kind and put them onto a lovely little compilation. It contains a Mastergame, a couple of Raves and the rest are all right. Who says you need mode 0 for neat graphics. All in all then, a desirable little package...

Lotus Esprit

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge is a one or two-player 3D racing game that's pretty darn good actually. Race around in posh cars over a number of progressively difficult tracks. It handles realistically, so there's none of this taking tight bends at 150 mph business. This does mean it's not quite as arcadey as some games, but provides all the more in the way of a challenge.

Impossamole

Impossamole is a mole with a mission. Well, five missions. It's a platform-type affair with lots of nasty but oh-so-cute creatures to jump over. You can start on any of four levels, and can play the fifth when you've completed them all.

Not that it's likely that you will. It's a tad tricky. Cute, but frustratingly difficult.

Shadow Of The Beast

Shadow Of The Beast has wonderfully detailed graphics. Having a head like a hammer is no joke, and it's down to you to right the wrongs and do in the guy who made you such an ugly get.

Crisp, graphics, loads of playing area and lots to do. Shadow Of The Beast stunned everyone on the 16-bits it was originally released on, and is just as impressive on the Amstrad. There's less colour, but excellent detail.

Ghouls 'N Ghosts

Ghouls 'N Ghosts is also available on the Capcom Collection. This is definitely the worst game in the pack. It's a hack and slash affair where you run around in a suit of armour and try and batter in the bad guys.

It's just that the scrolling is slow, the graphics are poor and it's not all that much fun to play. Oh dear.

Super Cars

Super Cars is another racing game, but it's very different from Lotus. It's all seen from above. You pelt round the tracks, trying to past the post in pole position. Points mean pennies in this game, and you can upgrade your vehicle to take on the ever faster opposition.

Among the goodies on offer are bigger engines and rocket launchers, so you can play to win by fair means or foul...

Second Opinion

Why stick Ghouls 'n Ghosts in Chart Attack? It's the only non-Gremlin game, and the only particularly weak one. This is the best compilation of the lot.
