Masterful Magnus

BBC Mastermind

This is a simulation of the BBC TV programme of the same name chaired by Magnus Magnusson. The computer is the quizmaster and you, with up to three others, are the contender competing for the Mastermind title.

Once the main program has loaded the computer asks how many people are going to take part.

It then requests the name and occupation of the first contender before asking what specialist subject he or she wants - the choice is films and TV or sport and games.

The first contender has two minutes in which to answer questions on this specialist subject. When one participant finishes his/her questions the next must enter name, occupation and specialist subject. If the suubject chosen is the same as that of the previous contender then the questions do not have to be reloaded (nor are they repeated), so it's better to sort out who wants which specialised subject before you begin.

When everyone has finished this sectioon, general knowledge follows. There is a choice of sets of questions, but only one can be used in each round.

A problem is that, because of pauses, it's too slow at times - such as when all the rounds have been completed - and too quick when the 'passed' questions are displayed, together with the answers.

Overall, if the few drawbacks were ironed out, the program would be even more addictive and offer greater value for money. Anyone who wants to learn something and enjoy themselves at the same time could do a lot worse than buy it.
