Arkadenoid

This Arkanoid-style game was compiled with BASIC Boss.

After choosing one of four “planets”, an interesting PETSCII intro follows. A pattern of red and yellow blocks has to be destroyed by bouncing the ball off the bat.

Take too long and “HURRY UP” appears, before an alien descends to kill the player. Collecting the falling ‘?’ marked capsules has a random effect, including removing the topmost block and speeding up the player’s bat. Capsules can also activate bonus sub games. The “Stranger Blinks” sub game requires the player to follow a sequence of lights then press the corresponding keys to repeat it whilst a different sub-game requires the player to guide the ball down between a series of scrolling blocks.

Yet another sub-game requires the player to avoid the vertically-scrolling obstacles on a narrow course. There are some nice ideas here, like the alien taking the shape of the level's blocks. But the game is spoiled by its slow pace, poor collision detection and the limited angles the ball can move in.
