3D Pool

Pool is always going to be a difficult game to computerise, but Mirrorsoft have come up with the goods. A unique and very intuitive control method makes the game enjoyable to play against either your ST or a friend.

You change the angle of your shot by actually moving the table around, and you accomplish this by holding down the left mouse button and swinging the mouse around. You can add top and backspin to the ball by moving the table up and down, and you choose the strength of your shot using the power bar.

There are four different play modes: tournament, two-player, practice and trick-play. Tournament mode enables you to compete against ST-controlled opponents, who get tougher the closer you get to the final. The practice screen gives you the chance to perfect some set shots such as a cannon, a guard, a chain or a pea-shooter. The trick shot section enables you to use the built-in trick shot editor to create your own speciality shots.

Gameplay is fast and comfortable. The ST has some very tricky players stored away, so it's probably best t get some serious practice in before attempting to tackle them. The two-player game is a giggle, and you could almost imagine you're stood in a pub - things get very competitive.

Graphically, 3D Pool is excellent. The swivel action on the table is smooth and fast, and this makes selecting shots very easy. Sound is minimal, but then, whatdayawant from pool? At ten quid, this game is almost as good value as Mirror Image's other budget release, Carrier Command.
