INTERNATIONAL KARATE PLUS ----------------------- (c) 1987 System 3 INTRODUCTION There are 17 different moves controlled by joystick (one or two new moves were added to the original game at the expense of old moves that were dropped). There is a practice mode. Opponents can be hit in the head, chest, stomach, shins and feet from the front or behind. Hits from behind give only half the normal score. Computer-controlled men use different combat-strategies. For example, when the computer controls both men, these men may not fight, they may just avoid attacks. More 'vicious' strategies exist, but are not identified here... Just observe. The tournament has 25 rounds with progressive difficulty. After the 25th round a belt is awarded. Each round consists of three 30 seconds bouts. At the end of a bout a judge appears and instructs the player(s) and announces the ranking(s). If a human player is in the third place, he's out of the tournament. The game has 3 players on each screen at the same time, so as long as the human player is in the 1st or 2nd place he is still in the tournament. The third bout of the round is a bonus bout where the player has to use a small hand-held shield to deflect balls bouncing towards him from all angles. GAME DISPLAY The score and game info is displayed at the top of the screen and comprises 3 sets of combat points and cumulative score displays. Human-controlled fighters are indicated by a colored fist to the right of the fighter's score. The white-jacketed fighter is controlled by player one. In the two-player mode, the grey-jacketed fighter is controlled by player two. OPTIONS SELECTION Game mode selection: Fire joystick while in demo mode: 1 player practice mode I : 1 player against 2 computer men -tournament mode O : 2 players against 1 computer man -tournament mode Special keys: M : toggle music on/off (128K only) N : toggle sound fx on/off (128K only) P : toggle pause mode MOVEMENT CONTROLS Each of the eight joystick positions selects a type of move, and pressing the button gives another eight. In special cases a defensive move is available (detailed later). ---------------------------------------- The diagrams below show the movements of a man facing right: Moves when fire button is NOT pressed: jump up * reverse face punch * * front face punch turn around walk backwards * * * walk forwards (or block) crouching * * shin kick stomach punch * footsweep kick Moves when firebutton IS pressed: flying leap kick * double face kick * * head butt back flip * * * stomach kick back stop * * high face kick face kick * turn around reverse foot-sweep turn around ---------------------------------------------- HOLDING AND CANCELLING A MOVE When making an attack move, you must hold the joystick in position until your man has made the attack. Releasing the joystick any sooner will cause your man to return to the standing stance. SEQUENCES OF MOVES It is possible to make moves in quick succession without the fighter first pausing in the standing stance, thus allowing a smooth, free-flowing sequence. This is done by first selecting the first move holding it until the attack has occurred, then quickly selecting a next move before the man returns to the standing position. This will allow such actions as a series of back flips across the screen. BLOCKING MOVE (defensive) if you are being attacked at close range from in front, and you select the 'walk-backwards' action, your man will stand in a blocking posture for the duration of the attack and deflect all kicks to the head, chest and stomach. However, it is not possible to block shin kicks and footsweeps (shins=knees!). GAME OBJECT A round consists of a sequence of 2 fight bouts and a bonus bout. In the 1-player tournament mode game, the round ends when the human player is in the third place. The object is to fight on for as long as possible as the score builds up, you are awarded one of the six belts colors, the highest being black and lowest yellow. SCORING For each successful hit from the front the player gets two combat points (1 pt =-a half disc, 2 pts-a whole disc!) and a numerical score. Attacking from behind earns 1 point and half the score. A fight bout lasts either for 30 secs or until one of the players gets 6 pts. This player will be awarded a bout time bonus of 100 pts for each second left in the bout. When a player is hit he falls down and passes out for a moment shown by the stars above his head. When they disappear you can pull up (on the joystick!) and get your man up, Otherwise he will lie on the ground for a few seconds more. ---------------------------------------- Here is the table of scores. The 'pts' column shows your score for a front hit - the score for a behind hit is half the one shown (except as noted). move : pts ==== ==== front face punch : 800 shin kick : 400 footsweep : 400 crouching stomach punch : 400 reverse face punch : 800 flying kick : 800 head butt : 1000 stomach kick : 200 face kick : 800 reverse footsweep : 400 back-step face kick : 800 double face kick (from front) : 1000 double face kick (from behind) : 1000 BONUS BOUT Here you are shown holding a small shield, with which you must deflect the balls coming towards you. As the game gets more difficult, the max speed of the balls increases. There are also flashing balls whose bounce height alternates. For each deflection you score 100 pts., and if you survive all balls you get a 5000-point score bonus. Since there can be up to 60 balls, a good player can add over 10 000 pts to his score in a single bonus bout and get to black belt status more quickly. HALL OF FAME In the high-score list your score with belt & belt color are given and you can add your initials (max 3 initials). Move the joystick left/right to choose the letter and press the fire button to enter. ----------------------------------------------------- Typed by Aaron Deveraux of Hackerworld ========================================================== Taken from Project 64 http://project64.c64.org Readapted for the Spectrum in 2001 AD by Alessandro Grussu http://www.ag-online.da.ru
