THE LEGEND OF TURRICAN CONTINUES... Morgul , the three-headed incarnation of evil, has finally been destroyed ! But you , Turrican, cannot rest because your mos t dangerous and mos t noble mission is ye t to commence.. . A long tim e ago , in a galax y far, far away , brave rebellious fighters destroyed the menacing hordes of the MACHINE and it' s tyranny-spreading satellite, which circled t he planet of the brave, the planet called Landorin. The evil moo n has gone , but Landorin wasn' t free . The MACHINE still ruled the surface of the planet. The Landorins retreated to the inner core of their worl d to awai t their destiny...DEATH. The machines and mutants , however, wen t on to roam through the deserted ruins of a long-lost paradise in search of the entrance to the secret caves. Before, the Landorins retreated, they manage d to send a desperate cry for help: A last radio signal floats through the endless reaches of the tri-solar system and off to the farthes t reaches of the universe. The cry is heard, and a ma n has to be found.. . A ma n wit h the courage to face the hordes, a ma n to free th e last survivors of Landorin, a ma n on his mos t dangerous adventure ever... TURRICAN . Go out to seek the MACHINE and its' slaves, collect the weapon s and ships of an ancient civilization and free the planet Landorin forever! Turrican travels throug h five different worlds in which he wil l be confronted by various perils. In the middle of the gam e he has to enter a space ship and fight throug h 3 levels wit h this hyper fast-moving ship. Ever changing enemies wil l constantly try to destroy you . You wil l have to use your weapon s skillfully in order to survive the various levels. To assist yo u in battle, further weapon s and extras m a y be obtained during your journey , e.g . forceshields and extra lives. Examine every level closely, yo u wil l find ne w surprises and useful items everywhere . H OW TO PLAY THE GAME General information : The gam e is played wit h joystick and keys . Owners of an Amiga may use a joystick wit h tw o independen t fire buttons . This is explained below. Joystick up: Player jumps . If he is the gyroscope mode , he wil l transform back to normal again . Joystick down : Player ducks away , e.g. fro m enemies . Joystick dow n and press space: (For Amiga : Joystick dow n and press second fire button.) The player wil l transform into a gyroscope. While in this state the player is invincible and wil l destroy enemie s on touch . The gyroscope spins automatically , and can only be directed to mov e left or right wit h the joystick. This shape also allows you to pass throug h narrow corridors. Turrican ma y transform into a gyroscope as often as he want s to . Only in t he gyroscope mod e he can place mines.. . The min e is placed on the ground and explodes shortly afterwards . Various enemies around can be dealt wit h in this manner. Joystick left/right : Move s player left/right . Keeping the firebutton depressed: The player can activate a flash of lightning (Surround) and ma y direct it (as long as the firebutton is held), by movin g the joystick left (lightning rotates anti-clockwise) or right (lightning rotates clockwise). The lightning can be of different lengths . At the beginning of the gam e it stretches over half the widt h of the screen. By gathering up extras it can be extended to stretch over the whol e widt h of the screen. Pressing firebutton briefly: Player fires. MULTIPLE SHOT The multiple shot can be increased twice in strength by collecting the right symbols . That means in the end this weapo n has 5 shots. LASER The laser has a high penetration rote, makin g it very effective whe n fighting against several enemies simultaneously . The laser fires horizontally , and can be increased in strength by up to 5 times by gathering up the corresponding symbols . The laser will then increase in widt h and become more effective. BOUNCE This shot can be increased in strength by up to three times . Very efficient in narrow passages or caves. Whe n twice in strength, the balls burst into smaller balls bouncing back fro m the walls . POWER LINES ATARI ST, C64 , SPECTRUM: SPACE BAR AMIGA: SPACE BAR or second fire button AMSTRAD: RETURN Releases tw o energy beams , movin g right and left over the full height of the screen. All enemies in range wil l be destroyed. Should an obstacle bar the way , the bea m will be terminated . SUPERWEAPON Pressing the firebutton and SPACE (or second firebutton) simultaneousl y The super weapo n is activated. Once per life Turrican can activate this weapon . It is the mos t effective weapo n as all weapo n systems are activated simultaneously. The windo w at the botto m left indicates whethe r this weapo n is still available. PAUSES GAME Pressing CTRL: Pauses gam e Press the firebutton to continue ESC Quit the gam e and return to the introductory sequence. During his mission, the player wil l find the followin g symbol s wit h useful functions : Shoot this symbo l to activate the hidden extra. Red - MULTIPLE Activates multiple shot. If already active, the shot wil l increase in strength. Green - LASER Activates laser. If already active, the laser wil l be increased in strength. Purple - BOUNCE Activates the bounce shots. If already active, the Bounce wil l be increased in strength. Blue-SURROUN D Extends lightning. Light blue - SHIELD Activates force shield, makin g the player invincible for a short duration. Enemies wil l be destroyed on touch during this period. Yellow 'P'- POWER-UP Recharges energy. White 'L' - POWER LINE The player gains on energy beam. Grey '1 up'-ONE-UP The player gains on extra life. Yellow - SMART BOM B Touching this symbo l destroys al l smaller opponent s on the screen. Diamonds Once the player has gathered up 10 0 diamonds , he receives another 'CONTINUE', i.e. has the chance to continue the gam e after all lives have been lost. The maximu m no. of CONTINUES is 5 (that means there are exactly 59 9 diamond s hidden). You can vie w the numbe r of CONTINUES of the botto m left. NOTE: There are no CONTINUES whe n the gam e is started. The player has 3 lives at the start of each game . He can lose the m in three ways : 1. Time , indicated on the display runs out. The screen display wit h announce TIME OUT. 2. The player has lost all of his energy . A loss of energy occurs every tim e t he player touches an enem y or is hit by enem y fire. 3. The player falls into an abyss. If you lose a life the numbe r of energy beams wil l default to 3. Surround, multiple, bounce and laser wil l be reduced - if not already at minimu m strength. The player can gain the followin g informatio n fro m the display (from left to right): • Number of lives (Amiga : Upper left corner of the screen). • Number of CONTINUES (Amiga/ST : diode display). • Time. • Number of diamonds . • Numbe r of energy beams . • Score (Amiga : Upper-right corner of the screen). • Energy (above score). HIGHSCORE TABLE Please follow the Instructions on the screen! AMIGA, ATARI ST, SPECTRUM, AMSTRAD If yo u achieve a top score, yo u ma y enter the highscore table. After entering your nam e press RETURN. C 64 A men u wil l appear. Enter the main men u by pressing the firebutton. Pressing the S-key wil l promp t a request to insert side 1 of your disk. Return to the men u by pressing the RUN/STOP-key , or press the firebutton to save a highscore. AMSTRAD, SPECTRUM, C64 , TAPE VERSIONS It is not possible to save highscores. TIPS & TRICKS • Try to use all weapo n systems . Think carefully which system wil l best helps yo u in a given situation. • Use the gyroscopes! Remember yo u can use the m as often as yo u wan t t o . Don' t forge t yo u are invulnerable and can use mines ! • Collect as man y lives and Continues as possible • Never give up - there is alway s a solution... • Do not alway s take the easiest wa y - there are hidden secrets everywhere .
