From Old Kent Road To Mayfair ============================= Game Features ------------- Up to five players plus the computer The computer considers deals and exchanges Short and standard versions Gave save facility Rules ----- Standard Monopoly rules apply. When the program has loaded, you will be asked if you have an unfinished game on tape. Type YES or NO and press RETURN. You will then be asked: How many players? The maximum number is five. The extra player is Beeb (the computer). The computer will then ask you for the names of each player and will select an order of play (at random). Note: Each player should remember the number he has been allocated. You then have the option of selecting the Standard or "Short" version (see notes). The Game -------- The aim is to make as much money as possible through buying property and collecting rent. In the process you have to bankrupt everyone else. After the preliminaries the game begins. The first player is presented with a range of options - these can be selected merely by pressing the appropriate key. Property Numbers ---------------- To save typing in long names, each property has a number (see Estate Agent and Sheet A). All instructions, other than the selection of options, must be followed by pressing the RETURN key. M (Mortgage) ------------ Pressing M gives you the chance to take or redeem a mortgage. In response to the prompt, 1 redeems a mortgage and 2 takes a mortgage. Enter the appropriate number and your account will automatically be debited/credited. Remember: you cannot have houses on a set of property where one or more is mortgaged. D (Deed Details) ---------------- This gives you all the relevant information for a particular property, e.g. house prices, mortgage values, etc. Simply type in the number and RETURN. P (Player's POsition) --------------------- This shows you where each player is positioned on the board. E (Estate Agent) ---------------- This shows you who owns what property and whether or not it is mortgaged. In addition, the property numbers are displayed. C (Computer Link) ----------------- This gives you a chance to do a deal with the computer. Tell Beeb what you want by (a) telling him how much cash you require; (b) telling him the total number of properties you require; (c) telling him the individual numbers of the properties. Repeat the process when making your offer. Note: If the question does not apply, simply answer with O. X (Transfer Deeds) ------------------ If you do a deal with another player (excluding the computer) use this facility to transfer any deeds. W (Transfer Cash) ----------------- As with Deed Transfer. B (Buy Houses/Hotels) --------------------- This enables you to buy one house at a time, but you must follow the rules, i.e. houses must be evenly spread between properties in the set and no property in the set can be mortgaged. All properties in the set must be owned, e.g. to buy five houses, follow the above process five times. S (Sell Houses) --------------- The same process as above. Remember: house sales produce 50% of cost price. Y (Your Position) ----------------- Shows you what is ahead before you decide on your options. Q (Quit Game) ------------- It is unusual to give up before you throw the dice. However, you could be in debt. This could occur in two circumstances: 1. If another player lands on Chance and gets the card 'It is your Birthday. Collect ten pounds from each player' then every player's account is debited ten pounds. 2. In Jail. If you are in jail, you have to pay a £50 fine to leave. The computer debits your account, so that again, your cash could be less than zero. Unless you can pay off the debt, you will have to quit. T (Throw Dice) -------------- You will see the dice and then the board over which you move. Four new options now exits:# 1. L (Buy Deeds) If the property is owned by the Bank, you can buy it. Your account is debited automactically and the deeds registered in your name. 2. O (Pay Debt) If you owe money in rent or fees, etc, your debt is shown in the bottom left-hand corner. This function will debit your account and pay your debt to the creditor. If you have insufficient cash, you must mortgage or sell property, etc. 3. Q (Quit Game) If it is obvious that you cannot raise the cash, then this sells all your houses at 50% of cash price and your property in cash is credited to the person that owns the property (or, in some cases, the Bank). 4. N (Next Player) When you have finished your turn, press N. If you have thrown a double, it will be your turn again. There are some minor discrepancies from the normal Monopoly rules: 1. There is no limit to the number of houses or hotels available to the players, but the maximum on any one property still applies. 2. If a player pays his fine in jail and then throws a double, he is entitled to a refund. 3. Each player can only take his options, i.e. buy houses, mortgage property, etc, on his turn. However, deals can be made with other players at any time and cash and property can be exchanged. Colours ------- As there is no orange, the sets which include Vine Street and Old Kent Road are coloured cyan, and the sets within include Mayfair and Pall Mall are coloured magenta. The Computer's Game ------------------- The computer plays a good game and requires no assistance when taking its turn unless it either: a. offers an exchange, when you must type in Y or N and press RETURN, or b. it offers to sell property, or c. it gets the card 'Pay a £10 fine or take a Chance' (you can decide for it) At the end of each set of moves, the computer tests to see if there is more than one player in the game; if this is not so, then it will declare the winner. As this is done only at the end of each set, you may have to move first. Saving The Game --------------- This can be done at any time by pressing Z. Follow the instructions given. It is recommended that this be done when the last player in the sequence has finished his turn, as the game always recommences with the first player. Note: Those with 0.1 OS may find some difficulty in loading in saved games. This is an Operating System fault, not a program error. The Short Version ----------------- This deals two deeds to all players and debits their accounts. When the time limit expires, then the total capital is assessed, i.e. Cash, Property at purchase price, etc... and the winner is announced. Appendix 1: Loading Instructions -------------------------------- Tape: CHAIN"" (RETURN) Disc: SHIFT-BREAK. When the menu program appears on-screen, type the number appropriate to the program named Monopoly. Note: There are four 'pages' on the Menu program. If the program title is not on the first page press any key to move on to the next and subsequent pages.
