Sliding Block Puzzles ===================== Introduction ------------ The Sliding Block puzzle is based on the "14-15 Puzzle", invented by Sam Lloyd in the last century when it was the popular equivalent of today's Rubik Cube. This pack contains programs on cassette plus instructions for six sliding-block puzzles: Alphabet, Numbers, Sunscape, Logo, Pattern, Swans. You can choose how many shuffling moves (between 2 and 511) are made to each puzzle before you attempt to solve it, and the computer will tell you how long you take, how many moves you make, and will solve it for you if you get absolutely stuck. Main Menu --------- The menu offers a choice of six puzzles: 1. Alphabet 2. Numbers 3. Sunscape 4. Logo 5. Pattern 6. Swans Select the number of the puzzle you want to see and then press RETURN; the 'Searching' message will be displayed. Press the PLAY button on your cassette recorder, and wait for the unshuffled puzzle to be displayed. In the case of Alphabet and Numbers, the letters and numbers are in order, and in the case of the pictures, the pieces are all in position. The Rules --------- The Rules are the same for each program: 1. You are asked how many shuffling moves you would like. Type in a number between 2 and 511, and press RETURN. 2. This is how you slide the blocks around: Use the cursor-control keys to move the big square cursor around over the blocks in the puzzle. Move it so that it sits on top of a block which is adjacent to the empty space. When you press RETURN, the square cursor slides the block into the empty space. You can slide one, two, three or four blocks at once by moving the square cursor on to one of the blocks in a row with the empty space at its end. 3. The number of moves made so far is displayed at the top of the screen. 4. If you want to escape from the game, type S to stop. You will then be given the option of watching the computer solve the puzzle for you - respond with either Y or N as prompted: Y. If you select Y, the puzzle is sorted fairly rapidly. To slow it down so you can see what is going on, press the Space Bar. At the end of the solution the computer will offer to rescramble the puzzle. You can put a stop to the solution altogether, and carry on solving it yourself by pressing S. N. If you select N, you will be taken straight back to the menu. 5. Once you have solved any puzzle, the time taken to solve it is displayed at the end. Loading ------- CHAIN"PUZZLE" (RETURN)
