For depth of gameplay, I think Space Rogue knocks spots off Braben's classic Elite. However, the in-flight combat pales in comparison with that game's dog-fighting.

A marvellous game which takes the formula of the original and twists it to make a highly enjoyable and fun-packed one or two-player game. An island caper not to miss out on.

A brilliant conversion of the coin-op.

Guardian II (Hi-Tec) (Spectrum 48K/128K/+2/+3)

Excellent mindless blasting fun for the mindless blasters among you.

Fighting Warrior (Mastertronic) (Amstrad CPC464)

Sparse playing area, lack of combat moves and simplistic gameplay make Fighting Warrior a bit of a no-no.

Cricket Captain (Hi-Tec) (Commodore 64)

While Cricket Captain isn't the best computer cricket game in the world, it certainly gives the majority a run for their money.

Boulderdash IV (Hi-Tec) (Amstrad CPC464)

An amazingly good game which, despite its age, remains as challenging and addictive as it was when first released. The addition of the Construction Kit, makes it well worth the wonga.

Beyond The Ice Palace (Encore) (Spectrum 48K/128K/+2)

A pleasing arcade adventure which offers nothing new, but still manages to grab the attention for a while.

Mountain Bike Racer (Zeppelin Games) (Spectrum 48K)

A Kikstart clone with few redeeming features - it shouldn't be near the top of your essential purchases list.

Rainbow Islands (Ocean) (Spectrum 48K/128K)

This conversion is awesome, containing all the best bits of the coin-op and some startling graphics and sound to boot!

Stryx (Psyclapse) (Amiga 500)

An enjoyable product on Psygnosis' cheaper label, with high-quality graphics and sound, and a pretty good game in between.

Wayne Gretzky Ice Hockey (Mindscape International Inc) (Atari ST)

A fast-paced game with a bit of strategy thrown in for good measure. It takes some getting into, but once you've studied the in-depth manual, you'll be hooked.

Weird Dreams (Rainbird) (Commodore 64/128)

A clever idea, ruined by over-difficult gameplay which leads to a huge amount of frustration.

Driving Force (Digital Magic) (Amiga 500)

An okay driving game - it has some novel twists but suffers from very poor and unrealistic car control and excessive game speed.

Zombi (Ubisoft) (Spectrum 48K)

A first rate adaption of a classic Zombie horror film, which catches the mood perfectly even before you begin and will keep your interest until completion.

The Jetsons (Microillusions) (Amiga 500)

Combining a good control interface and some excellent graphical touches, The Jetsons provides plenty of light-hearted relief for either a dedicated or novice adventurer! Great fun!

E-Motion (U. S. Gold) (Spectrum 48K/128K)

An astonishing game which no self-respecting gamer should be without.

Manchester United (Krisalis) (Amiga 500)

An amazingly playable sports game, highly realistic in a managerial sense, and very, very addictive indeed.

Golden Axe (Sega) (Sega Mega Drive (EU Version))

It looks good, is incredibly addictive, and should be put right at the top of your shopping list.

Slap Shot (Sega) (Sega Master System (EU Version))

As with most sports games, it's most fun when two players are battling it out... But even in one-player mode, Slap Shot is brilliant fun.

Herzog Zwei (Sega) (Sega Mega Drive (EU Version))

With two players, Herzog Zwei is very playable although the computer is a ruthless, unremitting opponent in one player mode, even on the lowest difficulty level!

R.C. Grand Prix (Sega) (Sega Master System (EU Version))

The graphics and sound are great... If you're after an original multi-player race game that's fun rather than exhilarating, check this one out.

Assault City (Sega) (Sega Master System (EU Version))

Admittedly, there are better shoot-'em-ups on the Sega, but that's not to detract from the pleasure I had playing Assault City, a solid, honest-to-goodness killing spree in the true sense of the phrase.

Digital Champ (Naxat Soft) (PC Engine (JP Version))

Computer boxing games have never been much to write home about... although ardent fans of the sport may glean some enjoyment from Digital Champ.
