World Tour Soccer 2002

Usually when one hears the words 989 sports, one usually thinks of either Game Day or Shoot Out. Some just cringe in anguish when those words are spoken, and for the lackluster job given to the PS2 versions, I can't blame them. Now, 989 comes out with a soccer title to add to their list of sports titles. Is it a dud like their other franchises, or have they actually learned a thing or two from the fans?

For starters, the game doesn't look half bad. While the presentation isn't up to FIFA quality, it won't be described as drab either. Graphically the game can't be called ugly by any means of the definition. Sure the player models are a little chunky with very bad hair, but the overall look of this title shines fairly bright. Smooth textures, superb lighting, and fast and steady animation are found in World Tour Soccer 2002. After a few games, I didn't even get a headache like my other experiences with 989. Graphically this is a good start for 989 to get back on track.

Audio-wise, the game ranges from mediocre to very decent. On one hand you have some great commentary and play by play that goes off without a hitch. You won't hear much repeating, as it seems the developers have watched a few games to measure from. On the other hand the crowd, while into the game, isn't interactive. Random cheers and chants roam the stadiums, but have nothing to do with the teams that are playing, the stadium that they're in, or what's taking place on the field. This is one aspect that EA has done right ever since the FIFA games back on the Genesis. All in all though, the sounds are pretty good, and will provide adequate ambiance for all your soccer needs.

Gameplay is pretty tight and easy to pick up and play. The button layout is pretty standard for this type of game, and the controls are virtually flawless because of it. The AI is also tough on the higher difficulty levels providing a well rounded game of pure enjoyment. Even as you increase the level, the computer just gets smarter, and doesn't resort to cheating to win, as most sports titles tend to do. If you're looking for a smart and great playing soccer game, you can really do no wrong with World Tour Soccer 2002.

World Tour Soccer 2002 also excels highly in the options department. With over 300 teams ranging from current to legendary teams, Tournament modes, Championships, and a fantastic multiplayer mode, it'll be a long time before you'll get tired of this title. This game is very deep and a must for any soccer fan.

Overall I have to give major kudos to 989 for finally finding themselves after a year and a half. While still not the "cream of the crop" they still have a strong showing with World Tour Soccer 2002. Hopefully this quality will carry over on to future titles from 989 as well. Only time will tell. For now, check out this title, you won't be disappointed.
