Warriors Of Might And Magic

This is just an insult to the folks who shelled out 300 dollars for the PlayStation 2. Warriors Of Might And Magic should show anyone who creates games for a living, what NOT to do. This games looks like a high resolution PS One game, and nothing more. In fact, I would bet money this version could've been done on the PS One. It's ugly, plays horribly, which in the end leaves only one conclusion: a very bad game.

Here we have the story of Alleron who is accused of witchcraft and Necromancy. His quest is to find those responsible for the release of an ancient, evil god unto the world. For starters you are greeted with a wonderful CG opening that is so good it could probably convince a person to endure hours of play time to play through the game. Next comes a loading screen, and finally the horror... oh, the horror. The graphics in Warriors Of Might And Magic are atrocious, and this is being nice. Vague textures, and tiny player models lead you through a world that could've easily been done on the 32-bit system. After playing the so-so PS One version, I was hoping for much more than what we have here. What happened to the higher polygon count, smoother textures, and dramatic lighting? The only thing dramatic about this title is the tear I shed when looking at the awful visuals. I'd hate beat a dead horse, so I'll stop the graphical bashing, as this game is down right ugly.

The audio is the only thing keeping WoMM from the fiery depths of the 'F' column. Actually the sounds are pretty darn good. Fine voice acting, great sound effects and even Dolby Surround sound. Granted, the game breaks no new ground in the audio department, but it shouldn't be slammed from start to finish, right?

Gameplay is also heads down to lonely street at Heartbreak Hotel. While some good ideas were behind the game's controls, they just don't perform properly. The fighting engine is just as problematic, making moving and combat hard to partake in. Overall the game plays like most every other 3rd person action title, just more poorly.

Options? Um? What options? Beat the game, if thy art willing and see the ending. That's the extent of it.

Nothing hurts me more than to write a bad review, because I tend to pull my punches. Unfortunately this game deserved every bit of bad word of mouth it gets. This game is fine for the PS One, as it is approaching the end of its life span, but not for the PS2. It should've and could've been much more. Easily, this is 3DO's biggest stinker to date on the PlayStation 2. Hopefully, Heroes of Might and Magic won't disappoint as much. Stay tuned folks!
