NHL 2001

Can you feel that chill? That must mean that hockey has started for the 2001 season. Oh yeah, 6 months of hard hits, fast skating, fierce action, and brutal fighting can only be summed up in one word HOCKEY. While the Dreamcast will be left out in the cold this year, (pun intended) EA will not let the folks who own a PC, Playstation, or the PS2 down. While it looks like the PC and PS2 will acquire the technical power, that doesn't mean you can't have a great game on your PSX. How does this year's game differ from the others? Not much, but some features may be enough to fork up another 40 bones.

Graphically, not much has changed. Added this year is a momentum meter, new camera angles, and a slightly cleaner look. The game does move fast and smooth, making each game exciting to the final horn. Some new lighting is also noticeable, as well as added animations, but all in all the game doesn't really get a new facelift.

Audio has also been virtually untouched, with added crowd involvement and revamped commentary. This isn't a bad thing though folks, as EA is the best in the business when it comes to audio. Every hit, slap shot, and atmospheric effect is a beautiful thing folks. The fact that the game is presented in Dolby Surround doesn't hurt either. EA is king of getting you into the game and keeping you there. The sound, simply put, is flawless.

The game plays like a dream, if not better, just as great as last year. I think it's enhanced, as you are offered a more varied choice of moves and shots to perform to score and hit. Using Sony's analog controller is like an extension of your own hand, as playing this game is a breeze to do, but tough to master. If you encounter a bad play, or bad scoring opportunity it's your fault, as this game plays wonderfully.

NHL offers a nice set of new features for the 2001 season. First off, the 2 new expansion teams, Columbus and Minnesota have been added, plus you get 18 international teams, to find out which nation is the best Portugal or Mexico. (Simpson's joke) A momentum meter that effects not only the crowd's reaction, but also the way your players perform. A vast career mode gives you the chance to utilize a full career with drafts, trades and free agents. As I mentioned earlier, new moves have been added, such as cannon shots from the point and one footed wristers. This game is killer to say the least, and a must buy for hockey fans.

While it may seem this is another final cash cow for the dying PSX, this game does offer much for the hungry sports fan. If you love hockey, and you love EA's hockey series, get this game...you won't be sorry.
